trans filter number?

I am about 2 years 20K miles from my last ATF fluid service, planning to do it myself. My Tranny Guy in Texas was the best; (Ted Garland, in New Braunfels), but time to learn this for myself.

I know about taking off the hose at the cooler and running the new ATF Dexron III through until it comes out clean; to flush the old fluid from the torque converter. But what about the filter inside the pan?

Is this a spin on filter, or a cleanable screen? Maybe it has both. I have access to NAPA or Dodge for parts; which is preferred? Will I need a new gasket for the pan, or is it durable enough to reuse?

I have a Haines book. Would like to check the band adj; but seems to shift just fine.

Anybody know the part # for the trans filter? My rig is a 95 2500 club cab (made in 94) CTD with 4 speed overdrive auto trans, and 4x4.

Thanks for any pointers you can give me!

I am wondering the same thing, as I am picking up a bunch of filters from Cummins this week.

Also, could you share with me how you go about flushing all the old tranny fluid from the Tranny and Torque Convertor and such. Thanks.

Don't think Cummins can help with the trans filter, use either Dodge or the autoparts.
I have no idea of the number, just tell the autoparts guy the year, model, etc and they pull it for me.
Get a gasket too.

Diesel_Kid,

I've seen others post here that you can get a full ATF fluid replacement by pulling the input line from the trans cooler, and positioning the hose so its output drains into a 5 gal bucket. Basically, you run your motor in neutral, adding new ATF while the old goes into the bucket. You should be abe to tell when the new fluid begins to run out the hose; then you are done.

***Please, anyone who has done this, if this is not correct, let us know here on this thread***

Having never done this before, I don't know if you drain the pan and renew the filter and gasket before or after you flush the system. Seems best to R&R first, but I'm not sure.

Also, I was planning to use the Wally-World Tech brand Dexron III, although if it is junk, I can likely find another brand. What do you guys endorse that is non-synthetic?

Never heard of this method for adding new ATF but have used the disconnect the hose method for draining the old fluid. You really only need to drain most of the fluid if you are changing to synthetic or your old fluid has been damaged from overheating, etc. Otherwise just amount that comes out when dropping the pan is sufficient.
