I just recently picked up my '96 with 285k on the clock. Without tearing into it, is there any way to know if this was already performed? Also, is there any appreciable difference in the quality of the kits offered? Any particular recommendations on where to get them from or just pick on and go?

I visited my local Cummins shop, joined the discount power club- I think it was close to $100 or so, but I also bought a nice quality Cummins water pump and Vacuum pump seal kit, so my total was much higher- the cummins seals are holding perfect. the only dry oil free part of the engine is where I did my KDP work. Oh, and my KDP as over half way out!

Seems like you are paying a lot for what you are getting with that kit. Since you can make a tab out of just about anything, the only thing you really have to buy are the seals, right? Do you have to get a longer bolt too? Seems like the stock bolt would be adequate since the tab can't be more than .060-0.090 thk. Even so, could be any decent bolt of the right thread length (grade 5 should be fine).

I used the stock bolt with no issues, now Cummins sells the tab for $ 2.50 and the biggie is the seal.......... Once again, if I am going to do it, I am putting the Cummins seal in, something like 50 bucks the last I priced it.

it was around $50.00 for the OEM cummins seal, I had to buy 2 of them as they are not easy to put in and destroyed one! I ended up putting the new seal in the freezer and heating the cover up with the halogen shop light, that allowed me to tap the new seal in easier- old school trick that I learned when putting in motorcycle crank bearings.
