Bought 1998 12v - KDP help anyone?

I finally, after about 3 months of reading through the forums and doing research, purchased a 1998 12v Quad cab, long box, Sport, Blue, 4.10 gears, 5pd, stock (no modifications that i know of or can see... doubt that will last long) truck. It was like I was supposed to buy the truck. One of relatives owns a car dealers ship in town and got this truck in right at the time I started looking for a new truck. He doesn't sell hardly any diesel trucks and its rare for him to get one in. So when he told me that he had a truck I needed to come and see I had no idea it would be a perfect match. The truck runs and drives great, it had a new clutch put in it right before it was sold and some other general maintenance. I just wanted to say thanks to all you guys out there for the huge wealth of information that is provided here. I'm in an area of the country that doesn't see many diesel trucks, well ok there are starting to be lots of duramaxs and powerstrokes but not alot of cummins, so information was hard to come by and not much use. So thanks again.

Now on to the business... I was wondering if there is anyone in my area that wouldn't mind helping me fix the KDP. To my knowledge this hasn't been taken care of and would really appreciate any help that could be offered. I read all the forum post about and the online tutorials but wouldn't mine the help of someone that has already done it. I'm pretty mechanically inclined so thats not an issue. And one last thing before I end my first long winded post, could anyone suggest the best guages and guage pillar post mount. I read alot about the need for them but not to many recomendations on the guages themselves. I'm sure there will be more questions but I had better leave them till later and end this book.

Thanks again and I'll post some pics of the new "rare" find in a few days.

Welcome to the forum, Encryptic. I can't help with the KDP except to say that doing the job is no big deal if you are inclined. Removing the fan is the most difficult part. Most people end up using a drift punch. Remember that the thread os backwards.

The second tricky thing is getting the crank seal re-installed. It is a two person job, I think, because the offset of the cover makes the balance very awkward.

Having a barring tool may be useful, but I found it easier to remove the dust cover and hold-turn the engine using the fly wheel and a small pry bar type screw driver. With the blade in a tooth and the handle against the floor, I could easily hold the engine to remove and replace the damper.
Good luck!

Using Harolds jig is very easy instead of tabbing it. Using the jig and pinning it, is about a 45 minute job, maybe 1 1/2 hours if you take your time. Harolds complete kit is 90$....read directions, easy.....
