95 12v rebuild
i'm starting a rebuild on my dads 12 valve. he bought the truck cheap knowing it needed a head gasket. but there was so much a/f in the crank case it ate the turbo bearings. so i'm gonna do the bottom end in it. just lookin for any tips or hints cuz its my first full rebuild on one. also any ideas on how to set it up for mileage on a budget. i was thinkin a hx35 hybrid, mild fuel plate, bosch 42hp injectors, and a timing advance.
oh truck is,
1995 ram 2500 5 speed, 2wd ext cab long box. 215hp pump
thanks

If you're pulling it (recommend) make sure you have a GOOD engine stand. I used an OTC Motor Rotor which hold two ends on my 96. And a good cherry picker. I had better luck unbolting the motor mounts from the block as well to pull and reinstall. Crank is heavy. Make sure the piston cooling nozzles are all in and are a press fit into the block so one doesn't fall out after reassembly. Two of mine were broken but still in the block. I did it without the FSM but wish I would have had it.

rebuilding it out of the truck. what size of dowels are used for holding the lifters? also what is stock timing? and what would be a reasonable advance for mileage?

You don't need dowels to hold the lifters up, just roll the engine upside down to pull the cam.
Unless your pump has been swapped, you'll have a 175hp pump, not a 215.

The engine may have been swapped, or maybe just the timing case. In either case, the pump could be something else. If its a 215 pump, the tag on the side of the pump will have either 0 402 736 887 or 0 402 736 913.
