5 speed: Noisy Third Gear
5 speed: Noisy Third Gear
Since I got the mud tires off, I can hear my engine and drivetrain better, and I can clearly hear my transmission/drivetrain at different times, mostly when accelerating. It sounds like "gears", sometime maybe kind of like clanging or ringing too.
Especially in third gear, when accelerating, and put the power to it.
Is this normal?

First, fill out your signature so we know more about your truck, makes it easier
I had a "noisy third gear" too when I first got the truck. I changed the oil a few times and it behaved OK. This lasted about 10,000 miles. On a normal routine shift from 2ed to 3rd, the trans started to make a very bad sound. I dropped a tooth. Not by choice I now have new trans with upgraded 5th gear. My mechanic pointed out how third gear is on the weakest part of the shaft, in the middle, as far from supporting bearings as you can get. This gear also probably takes the most abuse, tons of torque going through it during hard acceleration. This is not to say that you will experience a trans failure as I have, but I can say that third gear could be problematic. Change the oil and keep a ear on it.

Sounds more like gears meshing.
I have had the truck about 3 weeks now, but have not checked the manual transmission fluid level yet. There is a plug on the passengers side with a metal tag on it that looks like it might be the place to add fluid. It is about 2/3 of the way up on the unit from the bottom. What I do not see is a plug near the bottom to drain the fluid, so I can change it.

You need 4 quarts. Amsoil runs about $9.00 a quart and the syntorque from dodge runs about $18.00 a quart. Not many fluids are gl-4 rated.
Alot of people say to only use the syntorque, because of the sychros being carbon fiber. I am using the Amsoil now, but I need to do a change and I am going with the syntorque.
You can also get the syntorque from quad4x4 for I think $54 for a gallon.

I've got a similar problem in my truck. When ya get on to it till about 1500 sounds like a good howl/vibration sound. Above 1500 it sounds the exact same. This only occured after I installed the new clutch in the truck. Shifts seem as smooth as ever and only had a small grinding noise at at idle with the trans in neutral and no the clutch engaged (just sitting, not disengaged so to speak.) I have no clue what this problem may be. For the most part that idle "grind" has lessened alot with more milage on the new truck. SBC thought it may be the imput bearing on the transmission...
I don't know..
