third gear syncro???

I'm looking at a 99 2500 4x4 5spd, quad cab sport with 110,000 miles on it.

Truck looks super, runs great, drives well, only beef I really had is when shifting into third (seemed to be especially on a 2-3 upshift) seemed to get a bit of gear clash or something, not REALLY bad, and not everytime, but definitely noticeable. If you take your time4 and don't try and make a real "quick shift" doesn't happen, but if you shift quickly sometimes you get a bit of clash. Every other shift is as smooth as silk, Double clutch the 2-3 shift, no problem.

What'dyall think?

Truck comes with 12 month unlimited milage extended warranty.

I assume must be third gear syncro wear.

Price is reasonable.

I asked the dealer about it, (who is a fairly reputable, high volume dealer of used diesels) he claims normal syncro wear, nothing to worry about. The usual "they all do that"

Truth is, quite a few other 5 spds I've driven have done the same thing.

Not sure what to think, go for it or back away.

Well, its your $ and if you think its a good deal, then go for it. If that is the only thing that you are doubting, then it sounds to be a good deal. A little tranny/clutch work isnt too much to worry about, if that is all your worried about. But if it bothers you enough to consider in not buying the truck, then walk away and dont look back. There are more ctd's out there. Just my $.02.

I double clutch 3rd gear every time. It wont grind or clash gears but I can definatly feel it working harder getting in 3rd gear than all the other gears. Still I feel it a great shifting tranny for such a big truck. If you really like the truck then take the time and find out all the possible problems that that year had. Look up dodgeram.org. There is a lot of info there.

I'll agree that it is a great shifting truck transmission, for the most part anyway.

Even with the minor third gear clash it shifts WAY better than the ZF 5 speed on our PowerJoke F350 service truck .

It is terrible.

So I'm not crazy then?? Other people notice the third gear thing then as well??

Mine does the same thing. I am planning to change the tranny fluid here soon. Hopefully that will help. I've been told that is does.

Other people have noticed a similar condition??

How many miles tmoore???

I know my old F150 with M5 od. did the same thing, a tranny fluid change and a bottle of Lucas tranny treatment made a hufe difference

Tool, a little over 145000. That oil isn't really to cheap, but for 50 60 bucks. But to me it will be worth a try, if it helps it would be a lot quicker and easier then pulling it all out and replacing.

Pull it your self parts and labor no more $200, but if you had the place thats working on it pull it, probably half or as much as the work and all the parts would cost you. You can buy rebuild kits, or just tear it down and order the parts you need, but in my own opinion it would be worth it to take it to someone who does it everyday. And where you're at if might cost more to get the work down, I'm just going off what a guy I know that would do mine said it would cost. He is the one that sugested I try changing the fluid first.
