Poor Boy Transmission Mod
Hey folks it's hard times out there, heres a 25 dollar transmission mod that will really clean up your 2-3 shift in a 47 or 48 re for a couple hours labor and very little cost. Parts needed a sonnax oring intermediate servo cover and either a aluminum spacer available from pact for 5 bucks or if you really want to go low tech just use washers. Remove your pan and valve body, remove intermediate servo, remove c clip from servo and remove steel plunger and piston, remove orange oring from the steel piston and clean parts for reassembly. The aluminum spacer from pact or the appropriate washers go in first the idea being to remove the travel from the servo plunger. There is a small bleed hole in the servo piston by removing the orange oring the flow from the bleed hole will precharge the 2-3 shift circuit and speed up the 2-3 shift or bind up shift as bill kondolay refers to it. I have done this mod to several 47 and 48re and have been very pleased with the results uaually ending up with a much cleaner or crisper shift than with an aftermarket valve body.

YIKES!!!
Not with my tranny..... It may work, but I'm not knowledgeable about these trannies, and I wouldn't do this kind of mod without learning the how and why and what-if about it....
I want to do something, just don't know what yet.

Adding the spacer to the front servo defeats the "load-control" shift that Chrysler so lovingly engineered into the trans. It was added way back in the late 70s if I remember right. I dont like it, I like the shifts crisp and firm. I guess the had to do it to make the soccer moms happy!

if your tranny is "hunting" before shifting under light throttle, just push on the skinny pedal a little more. won't hunt anymore. local tranny guy has seen many trucks come in with that problem. the governor pressure solenoid isn't the problem. nor is the replacement of an aftermarket going to fix it. it's in the throttle motor and TCM. not sure if there's an update from dodge or not, but that may be the only permanent fix. i believe all of what he told me. he's driven all of the trucks that come in with the hunting issue, he steps on the throttle just a bit and it goes away.

The problem is there is little or no pressure rise right off idle and that contributes to the shuttle when things get worn because the gov solenoid cannot set fast enough. You can also make them shuttle shift by removing the TM and doing nothing else and that is a function of APPS position and output speed not matching paramters. That gets corrected with a shift enhancer.
Plenty of posts here and there on fixing shuttle shift and late shifting by replacing the gov solenoid and transducer with the aftermarket version. It is the only real fix.

Should of done a little clarifying but was trying to keep the post short.
Most of the transmissions I have done this to had either aftermarket valve bodies or shift kits or at the least the line pressure raised.
If you have an after market billet servo you have already eliminated the cushion effect that the spacer removes just at a much higher cost hence the title POOR BOY. The leaving the oring out to precharge the 3rd gear circuit simply speeds the 2 to 3 shift leaving your transmission in the bind up phase for a much shorter period of time. For those that haven't studied the workings of these transmissions, third gear apply pressure and second gear release are the same oil circuit so both gears are trying to apply for the length of the shift, so anything you do to speed up this shift is an improvement.
