Fixed! - Changed Gov spring - won't start - Fixed!

I changed the governor spring last night and just finished putting everything back together and now the motor won't start no matter how long I crank it.

Where do I start to diagnose this?

I cracked open a couple injector lines and they seem to be getting fuel.

Make sure you indexed the throttle shaft correctly.

you may have knocked one of the wires going to the fuel shutoff solenoid off. Check those first, towards the backside of the IP

It's one or the other. Done both myself.

I checked the wires and all is good. I can hear the selenoid clicking when the key is turned. I tried with my foot on the pedal and it makes no difference.

Each time I turn it over, I'm getting a puff of black smoke out of the tail pipe. If I press the pedal further, it seems harder to crank. There's a sweet spot with just a little pedal pressure where it seems to crank easiest.

I cracked open the front 3 injector lines and I'm seeing fuel spraying when I crank, in pulses.

I disconnected the grid heater and gave it a shot of ether and it fired for a couple seconds, then died.

What next?

What he said. That's most likely your problem.

I can't seem to find a sticky or picture of the right way to index it. Can anybody point me towards one?

I thought I marked it and put it back where it belonged, but after reading a few posts it looks like it's pretty easy for it to slip a tooth or two when you're reassembling the throttle lever.

The index was at 5:30 and 11:30. I moved it to 4 and 10 and it would start if I held the pedal down 1/4 of the way. I couldn't get enough idle adjustment, so I moved it to 3 and 9 and it started up and idled at 1400. I tried backing off the idle screw but it lost contact with the throttle lever, so I lengthened the throttle connecting rod until I had enough adjustment to get a nice 650 idle.

Thanks for all the help!

As it is now, there's no smoke at idle, so I think I'll turn the smoke screw in just a touch. I've got the fuel pin in at the max setting and I loosened up the star wheel 1/4 turn, give or take. I think I got about 1/16" of additional advance, too. I couldn't get the pump to move any more on my own. Maybe I'll try for a little more with a helper later on.

I've got a couple stop nuts to tighten, then I'll take her for a test drive. I hope to see a big difference. Let's see how she does.

Oh Yeah!

That's what I'm talkin' about.

She rev's easily to 3400 off the line. More power, no smoke at all. Guess I need to turn up the smoke screw and full power screw a little more!

From what I've read, they're not really needed until about 3600 RPM. Hope that's right.

According to Cummins the stock springs will handle a 50% overspeed without allowing the valves to contact the pistons.
