Opinions needed on gear change
Ok guys I need more get up and go with my truck. I was thinking of doing a gear swap from the 3.54 to eather a 3.73 or 4.10 gear. I pull a 10500lbs FW it really struggles up the mtns. Any pros & cons to a gear swap other them$$
What kind of rpm do most run at 65 mph with a 4.10?? I run a tall tire 33.50 inch I no this hurts but I like the look. Please chime in anyone that has done this swap.

4:10 s will def help you out but mpgs empty will suffer
we have 1 with 4:10s and it pulls our 10k Cat gen set( 110kva with 200 gal fuel) a lot easier then the 97 with 3:54 and the 97 run a #10 fuel plate the 99 has RV 275s. the 99 get 3 mpg less empty ,loaded they get about the same

You are probably going to be over 2000 rpm at 65 with 4.10 and 33.5's.
There was a handy tire size/gear ratio/rpm figure outer at wwwtirerack.com

I like my 3:73s with my 33 inch tires. I run 70 mph at 2k rpms. The only thing that would make it better is if I had a 6 speed.
I haul heavy loads over mountain passes sometimes and get good mpgs unloaded on the open highway. Not biased just found a happy balance.

Good discussion guys. I have 3.54's with 305's as well. I dont tow that much but when I do my tranny and EGT suffer badly. I actually saw something for the Dana cases that allowed 3.90 ratios as well. I am unsure if it is an option for our application but definitely something i have been wanting to learn more about. Not quite 4.10, but not 3.73.
