Opinions Needed, Bottle Jack or Floor Jack?

I'm shopping for a new jack to lift the CTD, mainly for tire rotations, brake work etc. I like the bottle jack idea because they're smaller in physical size and won't take up nearly the space in my garage that a floor jack does.

What is your all opinions on both types. I've been looking at the Sears 4Ton Floor jack and read the thread on that one also.

Thanks

Eric

I prefer a floor jack, and own a 4 ton model. I find it to more versatile, and safer to use than a bottle jack. It's easy to roll under the truck, and quick to lift. I have a bottle jack too, but use it only when the need calls for a second jack such as tire rotation. (I wish my spare tire had a matching aluminum wheel)

Floor jack is much more convenient, roll it around etc. More stable, sits on a wider/longer base. Lifts way faster and will lift much higher. Most bottle jacks only lift like 5" or so at a time. So it can often be a jack and block, jack and block kind of arrangement. Major pain in the butt.

Another vote here for a floor jack as well. I like the better stability it has over a bottle jack, quicker to use too. I can lift either the front or the rear of the vehicle at one time and then slide in the Jack Stands. I often leave the floor jack in place when I can as well, as a back up should one of those Jack Stands fail.

From a safety stand point, I think the floor jack is the winner hands down. A bottle jack does have some uses that are not possible with a floor jack, but that doesn't come into play with regular maintenance like you are talking about.

I hate bottle jacks. Too tippy. A 3 ton floor jack works OK for me, a 6 ton stand goes next to it any time I go under.

I use a 6000# fork lift, but since that wasn't a choice, I would go with the floor jack.

you can get one of those cool nascar jacks that'll lift the truck up in one shot. but anyway i would go with floor jack also.

I only use bottle jacks; I won't get under a vehicle held up with a floor jack.

(Well, actually that was a total lie but I was feeling sorry for the poor little lonely bottle jack...)

Eric, if you're gonna be jacking on a concrete floor, a floor jack works well provided you have room to store it and room to drag it around the vehicle at both ends (at the same time) without moving the vehicle. If you're gonna have to pick up the jack to move it you’ll be wishing for a bottle jack everytime you use it.
