need help,unknown fuel delivery

FROM GUY1996, on 10-6-12 after my 2001 dodge ram 3500 with cumming diesel had not been driven much in the last few weeks i did drive the veh. and after approx. 2 miles ad speed of approx 45 had just changed into overdrive and was just maintaining that speed the engine just went back to idle position with petal still depressed after releasing pedal it would excellerate again this happened approx 6 times in a 40 mile drive. the last 2 days i hane driven approx 50 miles without a problem. it sounds like afuel delivery problen but i dont know what .i dis have the fuel pump changed by dealer approx 15000 liles ago by a dealer at dodge shop .they told me that year 2001 dodge that thet did not make the same pump for truck and had to replace it by replacing the fuel tank with a intank pump. any help would be great thanks i did also use the fuel seperator after this happened but the warning light had not come on and the fuel that i drained out appeared to be clean.

First off, your dealer lied to you. They still make the engine mounted lift pump, and it is just a tick over 100 bucks. DODGE doesn't sell it though, they rope you into the devils harness. That is water under the bridge though, not that relevant except it applies to what we are about to tell you.

Next, what you have SOUNDS like what we call dead pedal, which can be a couple of things, but the dealership is going to tell you that you need a 3-4 thousand dollar Injection pump or a 7-8 hundred dollar APPS. I freely admit that I am not all that up on the 24Valve, but happened to be the first to see your post. I am sure we will have someone come on here to tell you to do an APPS reset, and I will also ask that you do the key on/off 3 times trick to see if any codes are stored. Basically, you turn the key on and off 3 times in fairly rapid succession without actually cranking the engine, then on the 4th on, leave it in the run position and watch your odometer, it will say P-XXXX,P-XXXX,P-DONE. Post those codes if any ( no codes it will just say P-DONE ).

We can start to help you diagnose this puppy then.

need help for fuel delivery problem.

10 9 12 thank you from GUY1996 for the imfo. I WILL TRY THE THREE RAPID KEY METHOID FOR CODES. JUST FUTHER IMFO.THE DEALER DID REPACE THE APPS PRIOR TO THIS PROBLEM WHEN I HAD IT IN FOR RAPID TRANS SHIFTING THAT STARTED WHEN TRUCK HAD APPROX 60000 ON IT . I NOW HAVE APPROX 130000 ON IT BUT HAVE SPENT APPROX 5000 ON IT AT DODGE DEALERS FROM STARTER ,ALTERNATOR ,FUEL PUMP AND TANK AND OTHER ENGINE PEPAIRS. L GUESS I AM LEARNING TO SLOW.WHEN THEY REPLACED THE APPS AT 700-800 that did not solve shifting problem. the last thing l did for shifting problem, was to install the apps noise isolator from genosgarage this was approx 4 mo. ago and shifting has been good so far.thank you from GUY1996

LOL, Stick around here, we will get you on the right path.

Where are you located? We have members all over the place, might be one close to you who knows a reputable Cummins mechanic.

As far as the shifting problem is concerned, have you tried cleaning and checking all your grounds, body to frame, frame to engine etc?

Ok, no codes is good, I assume your odometer just said P-Done?

Now, anybody know of a good Cummins shop near Lakeland Fla?

Guy, you need to make sure there is fuel pressure feeding your Injection Pump, either a pressure gauge or at the minimum a hobbs switch and a light.

Hereis some reading for you on the Timbo APPS replacement unit.

C'mon you 24 valve guys, I am about at my limit with space shuttle technology hints........
