Cummins dealer parts vs. parts house brand

I'm going to order a new water pump to keep on hand for when it's time to change it out. The Cummins pump is about $200 whereas a Gates pump is about $50.
Any opinions on whether it's worth it to spend the money on the Cummins pump? I've learned my lesson about using cheap aftermarket lift pumps.

Thanks,
Niemand

I've rarely been happy with aftermarket. I think case dealer might be cheaper. I'm running an aftermarket 6.7 pump. But a factory tensioner and a gates green belt.

I asked myself the same question a few years ago.
I am currently running one each of those brands in different 1st gens. Both have been working with no leaks for a year plus.

With how easy it is to replace the pump, the Gates pump might be the way to go.

I was thinking I could just get a couple of Gates pumps for half the price. And like you said, they're easy to change. But I will pay for quality/reliability. I just don't know if I'm actually buying a better made part or if I'm just paying extra for a box with a big C on it.

I bought two Gates pumps... just in case. The 1st one is doing fine.

Before you spend big money on 'genuine' cummins parts, figure who makes them or where they're made. Outsourcing is the norm these days.

Keep a spare belt in your truck as well. When my pump went it shredded the belt... in the rain... in Austin TX. At least it was near an O'Reilly's.

You'll be just fine using a Gates pump. I've been using them for many years without a single issue yet. Same goes for their belts, tensioners and radiator hoses.

As mentioned already, Cummins doesn't make a lot of their own parts .

Alright. Thanks. I'll just go with a Gates pump.
Thanks for the input.
