You got that right. I just got home from work a little while ago. Temp in McKinney is 21* with freezing drizzle. When I parked my truck in my driveway, I let it idle for a minute and it went into "high idle" mode without me touching it. That is only the 2nd time I recall it doing it.

Anyway, North Central Expressway really started turning into a skating rink just south of Allen. Before that it was the usual bridges and overpasses. But once I hit Allen, I really started losing traction w/slight fishtailing going up small inclines on solid ground at 20mph.

I kicked it into 4 wheel drive and it was fine after that...just had to take it easy and stay away from the other cars. I love snow...but freezing drizzle and black ice is no fun!!!

Ohhh....one more comment about the icy roads....

This is the first time I have driven my truck with the built, billet DTT trans in the ice. Let me tell you....it wants to go!!! I can idle at close to 30mph if I let it. That can sometimes not be a good thing.....in this particular weather.

It was controllable.......but it was definately an education driving it compared to the stock trans.

Big thanks to Brian and family.

How did the rest of the SBC DD install go? I am curious to hear how it sounds.

Can't wait until the next gtg.

3rd Gens kick into high idle, on their own, when the engine is fully warmed up???? weird.
On 2nd Gens, the parameters are so strict, you'd have to live in Alaska (or been at Dans in 04), and it still might not.......
1. Intake Manifold Temperature less than 0°C (32°F) and,
2. Coolant Temp is less than 60°C (140°F)

DTT tran, with higher internal fluid pressures, requires a lot of shifting into neutral, when dealing with ice on the roads!
At least, that's been my solution.

Crotex - Great Pics!

Bnold - Forgot HX-35 housing sand blasted & painted, tool box liners for Oscar, Jason & RJ and getting my wire tap working properly!

The 3rd gens are more like a PSD...they sense the intake air coming in and if you leave the truck idling, they will ramp up the RPMs for a bit....you can also go to your local dealer and have them enable the winter mode where you can use your cruse control buttons to ramp up the idle manually. Pretty cool……BUT i like my stupid truck....was hoping for a 3cyl idle this morn....but too warm i guess at 15*F!

Yeah my engine was at full operating temp. The only other time I recall hearing high idle was coming back from Dan's a couple a years ago when it got so cold.........(and everybody was sleeping in his camper and the propane ran out..).........and I stopped to fuel up in Sherman. While fueling up, it idled up to 1000 rpms on it's own.

I agree that you would think that would occur only when the engine is cold.

I do have the high idle enabled to use it through my cruise control buttons. If you turn it on.......it idles at 1100 rpms...then will go up to 1500 with a few pushes of the button.

Ohh....and I may have to try your....."shift to neutral" solution... for the ice....when needed. IT WANTS TO GO!! How much brake wear will you have trying to hold back 500 horses?

Who said he was at idle?
Mine will go into high idle pretty much anytime it gets below 40*, it will usually be after a minute of idling though. IIRC one time I started my truck and it was cold enough that the tach jumped from 0 to 750 and 2 seconds later it went to high idle. I don't think the cruise control idle set works on the original common rail (ie., mine)

It should work on yours. IT works on mine and mine is an 04. I don't think it works on the 03's with the old style steering wheel.
