Wind deflectors for 5er pulling ?

Who is using them ? Which models, why and how are they working ?

Which ones don't work ?

How much difference do they make ?

How much are they ?

Anyone make their own ?

Are these any good ? http://www.wingmaster.com/rv.php

I asked the same questions a while back on the rv forums and the general consensus was that they are real a great bug screen but are not any good for improved mpg.

I had a Turbo Wing on my truck....It would help some if your in a head wind....as far as any mileage gain maybe 1 MPG is all I would see.....most trailers do a good job of wind deflection by design so a added wing doesn't help much

In my photo gallery, you will see a large wind deflector that I bought from a friend of mine. I have a 30ft, 10,000lb, high fifth, and towed it from NW Ohio to Arkansas last year with the deflector. I got 12.5 to 13.5. Since that was my only trip with the truck, I have nothing to compare mileage without it, but my brother-in-law was getting 9 with this powerstroke.

I bought a smaller deflector (since my son, who generally helped me put on the deflector is moving out) and only had a 200 mile trip to Indiana. It only got 11.5, but, like I said it was a short trip.

All mileage hand calculated. I originally was going to cut down the large deflector so that I could handle it by myself, but got the other one instead.

By the way, if you are close to Ohio, I could make you a good deal on the large deflector.

I like the dark blue deflector in your gallery. Is that custom made or from a highway tractor ? I've heard the "3D" deflectors are much better than the simple wings, especially in a side wind.

I have one. On my last rig which had a flat front it gave me about a half mile to the gallon and it did make the rig more stable in cross winds. This trailer is rounder in the front and I don't notice much of a difference.

Superduty,
The deflector is actually emerald green - that matched my friends truck. It is a defector from a highway tractor, I believe. The racke that it mounts too is made out of about 1 3/4" square tubing. There were holes in the rack that bolted to some fixtures in the truck's bed rail holes. Since my friends truck was about a '99 model. Since the bed rail holes on his truck did not match mine, I added some tubing under the rack rails (for added height too) until I could get a change to re-weld it together for a better fit, but I never got around to it.

As far as stability, it definitely felt stable since it is much taller than the small deflectors.

nailzsn: Do you know what model of highway tractor that deflector came from ? I'm thinking it is the upper deflector from the FL112 tractors with a day cab ?

This is were I purchased my wing, the AEROTRAVEL III. I absolutely notice the difference in stability, especially in an off center head wind, cross wind, or when driving next to a big rig. Towing with 2500 Yukon XL, trust me! Can't speak for the mileage because I don't drive with any regard for obtaining good mpg.

I am not sure what model it came from since I got it from a friend who had the frame made to fit his dodge. I do know that if someone was close enough to pick it up, it could go with them for about a 100; which is significantly less than I paid for it.

I got a Ultra Trail-Eze II 5yrs ago at Camping World, It's a universal bed mount, automatic angle adjustment (varies by speed) and I got it for my W150 gasser. It cut Rpms 250 pullling a 22' 5r high profile.

I use it on my 98.5 pulling a 40' triple slide High profile and it dropped 200 Rpm at 70. I like the mounting ease, it mounts through the front stake holes and has given no trouble.
