A gooseneck ball tends to want to flex the trailer because of it's lower mounting position. Flexing a flat-bed or horse trailer doesn't really affect them like it does to a RV camper that has interior walls and slide-out sections. It tends to slowly tear them apart.

Hi guys....Nice site!
I was just searching for a similar answer but maybe you can go one better.
A buddy and me both bought new 05 CTDs and are both looking at race trailers with living quarters and a garage in the back.
Everyone we have looked at have had gooseneck hitches. We were both wondering if this was because this is a stronger...IE can hold more weight...Hitch or if there was another reason. Personally I would rather have a fifthwheel if for nothing else then I don't have to cut as big a hole in my bed.

If you can get a fifth wheel go for it, else go with the gooseneck, just don't use a regular bumper hitch.
We had a problem with a bed mounted gooseneck hitch, on slides, that was similiar to a fifth wheel hitch. Going thru contruction we bounced, and bent the slide rails on the bed, it was rated at 26000 lbs ,and we were only carrying 12000 lbs.
We had that pulled out and had a below bed gooseneck installed. We have had no problems with the hitch since, and it rides real smooth.

In most cases you can change a gooseneck trailer to a 5th wheel coupler. Ask the company that you are considering the race trailers from...I have seen both...and prefer 5th wheel.
