Where to mount Brakesmart on '06 Laramie with center console?....UPDATE

I'm looking for ideas on where to install a Brakesmart on an '06 Laramie. I have the big center console on the floor so please consider that when you respond.

I thought it would fit in the "slot" just under the radio but it is not high enough. Although if I cut out the very thin piece of trim just underneath it might work. Any thoughts on this idea would be appreciate as I don't have any experience cutting interior trim pieces and I don't want to ruin anything.

TIA

I didn't think that would be a good place for a couple reasons:

1. I won't be able to see it while driving as steering wheel is in the way.

2. The brakesmart is larger than I thought and I'm afraid my knee will hit.

Do you have any pics?

I mounted mine below the steering column and slightly to the right. Not so far to the right as to interfere with my right knee. I have to look sort of through the wheel to see it but there is really no reason to look at it once it is set up. And the **** is easy to reach. Also the mounting and wiring was easy because it's on the removable panel. Good spot. And don't worry about seeing it all the time 'cause you won't want to and if it's in your face the bright display will be irritating. You can turn it dimmer but it defaults to bright.

PS. Have you seen the "daily devotions mode" yet? Sheesh, what were they thinking?!

Yep, to the right of the steering column on the removable panel is where I have had mine mounted for two years. Works just fine in that location for me. Not much need to watch it. Only time I look at is upon initial hook-up. Rest of time its set it and forget it, unless it beeps at me for something. I'll see if I can take a pic tomorrow and post it.

Actually I don't have it yet, it's on order.

How bright is the light? I can't stand bright lights in my face at night.

When you turn down the brightness is it low enough?

Here is a photo of where I have mine located right of steering wheel on the removable panel. Also, there is very little illumination as it only illuminates the pixels necessary to compose the text. At night you will hardly know it is there.

Your welcome! Tip: When you do mount it just be sure to flip down the panel first, before drilling/screwing, and make sure the screws will not interfere with anything behind the panel and they clear the panel's ribs.

I mounted mine so that the bracket lined up with the right edge of the panel and the screws cleared just fine. You could probably go even more to the right if you wanted with the bracket bridging the seam by an inch or so for more visibility if you wanted. The bracket should not interefere with opening the panel as it drops down either way.

The nice thing about the BrakeSmart is that it is so smart you hardly ever have to fiddle with it.

LanceK,

Yes, you can turn down the display till it is really dim. Not a problem. But down low like we've been talking about it is not in your line of sight. You can also set it to go to sleep after a very short period of non braking and the display goes out. Then it wakes up when you step on the brake. Just put it where you can reach the button easily if you need it and where you can see it if you need to, but not in your line of sight because there is no need to be watching it all the time.

Well I received my Brakesmart today.

Apparently it looks like the panel near the steering column has been redesigned for the '06's.

It is not flat like the picture above and wouldn't really be a clean place for mounting.

I have the large center console that comes with the bucket seats. If anybody has the same setup, have you mounted or considered mounting a brake controller or anything else similar in that area?

Any other ideas would be appreciated.

Brake Contrller Mounting

Hello,
I'm new to this so please bear with me.
I looked at the picture of the mounted brake controler and I also have
a 2006 with the large center console. I just mounted my brake controller
and would not mount it near the sterring wheel because the dash came
down so low it would put the controller out of site and out of reach.
I decided to mount mine in the center under the radio. I have a Tekonsha
Prodigy that came with a neat sleave. It mounted in the flat space under
the radio. I had to cut out a hole in the plastic facing for the wiring to come through, and that was the easy part. I had to remove part of the console to get at the piece of plastic that is verticle under the radio. (Not really hard, the
part with the cup holder is just snapped in place and then three bolts to remove) The reason I had to remove the verticle piece is to drill for the mounting screws, no room in place.
