What is the difference?

O.K. this is probably a dumb question for those of you who already know the answer but I don't. I want to know what the difference betweene a 5th wheel and a goose-neck trailer are. I know they attach differently and it appears that the RV world uses 5er's and the construction/farm side of things uses goose-neck trailers. What is the purpose? Does one do something better than the other. It looks like a goose-neck would be a better choice because without the trailer you still have your bed to hall stuff in. :

Re:What is the difference?

My 5th wheel pulls out of my bed with 4 pins. Takes one minute to remove. I find the 5th easier to hook up in the dark. Back up and slam/click. Dunno the other differences tho.

Re:What is the difference?

The fifth wheel is easier to hook up. The gooseneck gives you more bed rail clearence and room in the bed IMO.

The gooseneck allows a little more flexibility on rough ground.

I was gonna say that also but with the 5th's that swivel now is that a thing of the past??

Re:What is the difference?

I was wondering the same thing too. I thought that I read somewhere that a gooseneck puts more stress on the frame than a fifth wheel does.

Re:What is the difference?

I don't see why that would be true. Depending on which hitch you get, they're both pretty much mounted to the frame the same way.

Re:What is the difference?

There was a great thread about GN vs 5th a while back, but i cant seem to find it. As far as the stress goes, i think where people run into problems is when the use some type of converter (turn your 5th wheel camper into a gooseneck hitch). I personally use a gn for my farm/const use. I often go a fair amount of time without using the trailer, so I remove the ball and I am left with a 2" hole in the center of the bed, but all is flat. Hoss--how do you think we are gonna do thurs night in Va?

I think there's a chance we won't do ANYTHING. >

But....either the Ags will surprise everyone and pull off a huge upset, or they'll play like they have the past two weeks and get beat. Time will tell...but if the game happens it's gonna be a TOUGH one.

Now...back on hitches...I too have heard that the stresses are usually caused when the adapters are used changing a 5th wheel trailer to a gooseneck. Generally, in the world of pickup trucks, I think goosenecks are used for heavier loads than 5th wheels....which would make sense when you see that most gooseneck hitches are rated for 30,000 pounds and most 5th wheels are 16-18,000 pounds.

I think THIS might be the thread Matt was talking about. It has a lot of good info on gooseneck vs. 5th wheel on the 2nd page.

I don't blame him, but I don't think this is his call. I think this one is out of his hands. Time will tell....

Re:What is the difference?

Thanks for the other link Hoss. After every thing I have read it sounds like the big difference is weight.
Thanks Tom
