Tire mounting
Tire mounting
Got my new Towmaster 8-14.5 bias ply tires Friday. When I opened the boxes I noticed that the tires where compressed to get two tires per box.
Well every thing was going ok. Take old tires off rim and put new tires on the rim. Then came time to get them to bead
Wasn't going to happen.
Next day put the tires in the sun and went to NAPA and bought two cans of starting fluid
. Well took out all the valve stems sprayed the inside put the flame to her POOF
. NOTHING!!! When the flame went out I took the staps to it nice and warm now. Sprayed it again, flame, POOF
SUCCESS.
Did the same to the rest and all is well.
Anyway, I am not saying this is the best way to do it but it is the only way I could get her done with out leaving the tires out in the sun for a month.
Anyone got a better way??????

I have one of those hoses that you wrap around the tire and air it up, it collapses the center of the tire down and pushes the bead against the rim. I have also used a cranking type tie down strap around the tire. Both of those work like magic. I usually force the bead against the lower side of the rim and crank/twist it on a little. They make something you can spray on the rim to make the tire stick, all the auto parts have the stuff. The cold really does mess up mounting tires.

I just saw the price of the 5 gal Ceetah tank. Would be nice to have but I don't mount that many tires to justify the price ($322.00 was the cheapest I found.)Didn't find Tire Tiger yet. Is this the same thing?
We have the TireTiger, same thing as the Cheetah, just red instead of yellow.
They are so ridiculously simple that it is actually silly to buy one.
All they are is a portable air tank with about a three-inch pipe, the end hammered flat, with a big BALL gate-valve.
You pump about 100 PSI into the tank, press the flattened end of the pipe between rim and bead, suddenly flip the ball-valve all the way open, blasting the entire tank-full of air into the tire at once.
They are somewhat like a bazooka, as you don't want to have any part of your person in the line of recoil.
After we got the TireTiger, I saw that I could have made one for about $25.

I made my own. Took an old 20 lb propane tank, removed the valve. Replaced it with a ball valve and a short length of one inch copper sqeezed to about a 1/4 inch on the end. Pump it up to about 100 lbs. Make sure you have a good grip on it when you open the valve.
BearKiller, I was thinking it looked like a regular portable air tank but do they make them with a large enough outlet to use a large dia. pipe?
I guess I could drill and weld what ever I need.

How big of a tire have you done with this set up?
Ours gets used several times a day, on anything from little-bitty lawn-mower tires up to big 38" wheel rear-tractor tires.
It is a lifesaver when dealing with 22.5 and 24.5 truck tires.
