theft protection of GN.
theft protection of GN.
I worry about it....seems like its an easy thing for someone to take. I saw a stolen "add" on a site of a local gn trailer when I was looking. I also talked to a friend a couple nights ago, his trailer was just recently stolen too.
Other then a wheel boot I can t think of anything very good.
Any suggestions, or links to theft deterants?

I had thought about moving the hitch into the locked position (like you would when towing it). Then putting something like a cable with a pad lock (like you would use to secure a bicycle to a bike rack) through the locking hole. This way no one could hook up to the trailer. On my trailer, I pad locked the locking pin into the hole, by padlocking it to the safety chain. It must have worked, cause I still got my trailer.
they do make a lock for them, kind of like a collar that goes around the coupler. IF you search for "valley vey supply" they have hitches and this lock and seem to have good pricing. However, if you use this type of lock, if you have a trailer like mine that has two set screws to adjust the height of the coupler, all a thief would have to do loosen the two bolts, slide your locked coupler out, and slide another one in.
Check these out. Just got them. Even comes with a lock for the adjustment bolts AND includes the locks if you buy the package. Excellent fit and finish. Very reasonable price and a great company to deal with. Nothing but good to say about the company and the product.

If you dont use your gn all the time - slide the neck out. Hard to steal with nothing to hook up to. you can also run a chain thru the wheels and slap a lock on it. Cheap and easy
All a lock does is keep and honest person honest.

Thats the problem BBD. I ve had the legal oppurtunity to break into things.....and such....and most of the things I see will only keep an honest person honest.
If I were stealing a GN trailer, I would take my own neck in the first place, and what theif doesn t own a couple of large bolt/lock cutters? I could get a GN with a chain through the wheels, and a missing neck in less then a minute probably. Most locks are a joke.

I don't know that there is going to be a solution that completely saves the trailer. Nothing is entirely theft proof, anyone who wants something that bad is gonna get it. Even locks on your house won't totally prevent a break in, but most people don't think twice about leaving it. All you can do is prevent someone who just happens to notice that your trailer is not secured in anyway from taking it. If they've scouted out your trailer enough to know what its gonna take to get it then they're gonna take it no matter what.
But if you want to try, I thought about hooking up an electric fence charger to it. If nothing else it would sure give them quite a "SHOCK"

Trailer Lock
This what I use to stop the bad guys. It is hard to steal with this on the trailer.http://www.tjtrailers.com/store/product5515.html
Turn your trailer lifter (I forget what it's really called) into a detachable. You lower the trailer onto a large block of wood so the hitch is too low to hook up to and detach the lifter. Or raise it so it's too high to hook up to and do the same thing. Or am I just way out in left field? I'm just guessing...I've never looked at a gooseneck set-up very closely.
I move mine to the locked position, drop the pin down, and wrap the safety chain around it one way and lock it in position. They could still lower it down onto the ball bit it may not stay there real well. I like the lock in the post above.
My handle for the gooseneck jack comes off so I lower the nose below the bed height or way above and your good. You can also pull the GN insert out of the tube which would be good also.
Mine is not usually the fanciest rig at the barn or show so not a huge deal.

I had mine stolen, figured I would lock the slide lock on it closed with a padlock, didn't stop them.
I pondered how to secure it for several nights while waiting to get a new trailer, one of the ways I thought of was to get a heavy metal tube, align a spot that you could look through the wheels to the frame, cut a hole on each side of the frame, and weld that tube across, then get a long stainless steel bar, drill a hole across it on each end. Get 2 special locks that go over a rod and lock, slide the bar through the wheels, the frame, and through the opposite sides wheels, install the 2nd lock on the other end of the rod. Wheel is now locked from turning, to the frame. You can't get a bolt cutter to the locks, you can't get a bolt cutter anywhere along the rod. You would have to take a torch and cut through the tubing and then the rod to remove it. You can't pull the wheels off either.
A little expensive, but if you need that much security ???
We just found a secured storage facility, got a gooseneck lock, and also ran a chain through the wheels.

Hey, there's a good idea...you can't use an oxy-acetylene torch to cut stainless steel...it's impossible. If you get the right kind of stainless you can't even cut it w/ a hacksaw. You have to use a grinder to cut through it.
