PA Specific weigh station question
PA Specific weigh station question
Yep, you got it do I need to stop? I do not require a DOT number, I do not hire out my services, I have "not for hire" on my trailer, and no signage on my truck.
I have heard its "all commercial vehicles" and I have heard that its only "for hire" commercial vehicles, so does anyone know? Im trying to be legal and all, and not overweight, and hauling my own items, but id hate to pull in if I dont need to, its like your asking to be pulled over.

I would call the PA DOT and be sure, but with that said simply obey the posted signs. I've seen signs that say "all vehicles over 8000 must weigh" this to me says you must stop commercial or not. Here in CA they read "all trucks including delivery and moving vans- no pickups" Hense, I never stop.

All commercial vehicles must stop! If you are not commercial you do not need to stop!
Although hauling loads of scrap several times will surely get you noticed! You better be 100% legal if you do get pulled over. I've read some of your previous post about hauling scrap steel and this would be considered commercial since you are hauling this to the scrap yard to make money. A couple trips a year and I wouldn't worry but a couple trips a week I'd be legal.
This is a lot differant than hauling your street rod to a car show.
Update:
I was east bound thru Ohio on 80,
I was pulled over for no markings.
I said I hope there are no marks on my truck!
He says DOT/MC etc...
What do I need that for?
for hauling 2 classic cars, do you have sales reciept?
no sales reciept sir, do you have sales reciept for your cruiser?
how do I know they are not stolen?
are they reported stolen?
drivers license please
ok have a nice day?
You can get stopped at any time! Just have your ducks in a row!

Thanks for the info. My truck is now 100% commercial and to "DOT specs" (They will find something) However I dont need a DOT number, since I am not crossing state lines(spoke with FMCSA on phone) However I do have 26k truck Regs, medical card, keep hours of service, etc. I was just curious when one of those temp signs are placed that says "ALL TRUCKS MUST EXIT" does that mean me? I guess then it does.
I dont have any scales to deal with unless I choose to run 100% interstate, and then I do.
Atleast in hauling scrap cars, I have never heard of any commercial hauler get asked for upteen titles for what he is hauling. Most dont have them anyway.

You might want to check with PA DOT about needing a DOT number. FMCSA said you don't need a USDOT (Federal) number because you are not interstate, which is correct, but most states require you have a state DOT number for intrastate. Another thing to think about is this, whether or not you are considered interstate, is determined by the intent of the load. In other words, if a load is going from MD to OH through PA, and you pick up the load on the PA side of the MD/PA line and drop the load on the PA side of the PA/OH line, even though you never left PA you are still considered interstate and would then need a USDOT number.

check this link, if you gvw is over 10,000 lbs. and you are compensated you must follow FMCSA rules.

Yeah, if your registered at 26k go in the scale. If they don't want you they will send you on your way, but if you don't go in you will definately have some problems if they come get you. You are commercial and over 10k so FMCSA standards apply to you.
I have always heard that non-commercial doesn't need to stop. I hope so, because I have never stopped at the Conewingo Dam weigh station. It has the "All vehicles over 5T GVW must weigh in" sign set to "OPEN" most of the times I've been through there. Of course I'm kind of curious exactly how much my truck/trailer/Jeep weighs anyway, so maybe next time I'll stop. How much does it usually cost? This weigh station is in Maryland BTW....
