OD on or off for towing?
OD on or off for towing?
I am taking my first trip with my new to me 97 Dodge 2500 xcab long box 4x4 with 4.10's this weekend. I will have my 1600 pounds camper on the truck and pulling my 6000 pound Jeep trailer behind. Will I be alright towing at 65 mpg in OD (2100 rms) or do I need to turn the OD off? Obviously the truck is an automatic. Thanks for the help!
As long as its not shifting back and forth then yes leave it in OD.. if it is, then you will have to get out of OD, but with that you will be revving fairly high in Drive at 65. I haul daily and have around 10,000 behind me and i run in OD on the interstates, i did that with my old transmission and still do it today with my fully built one
I pull 9500 pounds with my truck in OD. When I hit a steep grade and truck downshifts I take it out of overdrive until I reach the top. Watch the tranny temp when it gets over 250* you are starting to cook the fluid. I change out 5 quarts whenever this happens.
If you have a prometer, you would see your ok in overdrive unless you hit some real big hills, then you start to get some bad heat. You can tow enough weight, up a big enough hill, with a stock truck to over heat and cook your head, n pistons, I have approched doing this, but when the truck shifts down, it drops the temps to safe levels. So if you dont have gauges, and hit big hills (5+ % grades for 1 or more miles) click it off and you will not have to worry.
