Need help with a short

O.K. here is the deal. Something caused a short on my gooseneck trailer (or truck) I think I have it narrowed it down to the truck running lights connection.I have both signals, brakes and brake lights, but no running lights on the trailer. When I connect the trailer to the truck, the running lights on the passenger side of the truck light up. I do have a connector in the bed of the truck and used a plug-n-play harness to install it. Disconnected the harness and hooked up the bumper connector just like original and have the same problem. I am thinking the problem is at the factory pin connector but want to know if I start cutting wires and splicing them back together (eliminating the factory pin connector) will I do more harm than good? When I discovered this it drained the batteries dead in about 6 hours. Thanks in advance.

The trailer is good. I think it is the pin connector that plugs into the back of the truck outlet. rectangular shaped plug with a PITA lock on top of it that plugs into the back of the truck 7 pin. Hope that made sense.

the best advice i would have is to check all the connections with a test light and find exctally where the power stops.

Thanks. That is where I was headed until another round or rain came and it was dark:30 The lights coming on on one side of the truck when I plug the trailer up is what really threw me.(the light switch in the off position and it lights up the passenger side????)

I don't think it's in your truck plug because you'd be seeing the problem all the time, not just when the trailer is plugged in. It's in either the trailer plug or trailer wiring I would think. I've seen trailer plugs cause this problem in the past, so I think I'd pull that apart and see what might be shorting out first, then go from there.

If you haven't already done this, I'd open the trailer plug first. You could have a frayed wire shorting across the plug. I seem to remember something about a relay or something on the the 3rd gens have a problem with trailer lights or something. Sorry, I can't be more specific.

Just to continue the echo, there has to be a short between the running light circuit and the trailer battery charge circuit on the trailer side...

Thanks for the info. If I don't end up working till dark again today I will start with the trailer wiring because I already replaced the trailer plug thinking that was the problem and to get rid or the 6 way and use a 7 way. The problem was there before I switched ends so I will start chasing wires.

Try hooking up a different trailer to see if the problem remains.
