MN Scales
MN Scales
I got asked to go over to a town north of Albert Lea Mn. and pick up a car and bring it back to South Dakota for a guy I work with. I have a 35 foot goose neck that I would use to go over and get it but I don't know if I have to stop at the scales or not. I am not going to charge him for it so I don't think I would be considered commercial. Just want to do it for the fun of going over and doing it but I don't want to get in trouble at the scales.
Generally speaking, if you have personal plates on your truck and trailer or pull an RV and haul personal items not for hire, you are exempt from the Scale stops. Sometimes Barney Fife will come along and try to tell you things and "explain the law" to you and tell you to put the phrase not for hire on, but I wouldn't start out that way. I've talked to several RV'ers that put that on their tow rig and they said they did it so the Barney Fife's will read that before they pull them over to "explain the law" to them only to find out you are leagal. Then15 min later you are back on the road again.
