I'll be taking my new cargo trailer with me as I travel for work. Do I need to cross scales since it is a private/RV trailer? Gross between 16,000 and 19,000 on average.

I know of no states that require or even want RVs to stop at the scales.

Iv'e been told Some states look at it this way. Is this truck a comercial vehicle?
Don't use any signs or lettering and you should be ok.

 

Nope, not commercial, just a 32' enclosed gooseneck with added height for my added height.

 

OK...what if I were to restore a 1968 Peterbilt 2 axle and register it as a historical truck(30 years and older) to pull our 5th wheel....Are we suppose to stop at the scales?????

I've been through 14 states since I started this thread and none of them so far has required non commercial vehicles to stop...

Actually, a number of states will plate a Class 8 tractor as a recreational vehicle if it's being used to pull a 5th wheel. Add some "Not for Hire" decals, and away you go!

Having said that, I don't know how long this loophole is gonna last.

I spent a good 45 minutes with a nice lady from California DMV a couple of weeks back getting as much information as I could. That was one question that I didnt ask..I did ask about the RV registration and the" NOT FOR HIRE" decals on the truck. She said that in Ca it does not make any difference if I do pull an RV..the truck still falls under a commercial lic. Now the only way that I can change this would be to do the "Historical" truck. We talked about lic. fees and she figured with pulling a 12k GVRW and the GVRW truck my Ca tags could run me as much as $800.00 per year.
At that price it still does not cover a trailer that I might borrow and haul a load of something now and then. The total cost for an 80k GVRW truck is over $2000.00 per year..

As I said, the RV loophole doesn't exist in all states. As your experience indicates, California (as I might expect) won't register a Class 8 that way.
