Re:Jake brake or not?

According to Pac Brake's web site their brake only works at 2400 rpms and over. Does anybody know the rpm range of the Jacobs E Brake?
http://edgewoodnational.com/ quoted me $700.00 for a Pac Brake.

Mexstan,

If ya have American $$, I would suggest checking out some of the Canadian suppliers, mainly because the American buck buys a lot more.

Big names that come to mind are Wildcat Diesel, Piers, and BD Power, you could also try calling Cummins directly (for the JAKE) - of course you likely know about these guys already, if not shoot me an email for contact info.

Re:Jake brake or not?

Unfortunately I use Monopoly money. It is called Canadian dollars. I did try Cummins and their price was very high. Did not realize that the other companies you mentioned sold engine brakes. Will check them out. I'm not in a hurry for this but if I can find a kit for no more than US$600 will buy it.
Thanks for the info.

Mexstan,

I did a quick look, Piers has the Pac for around $ 885 US. I think that you need the HD exhaust valves. I would ask and make sure you dont need these if/when u order.

Wildcat has Jakes and Pac for $650 !!! Better snap one up if ya want it. Looks like the way to go.

Re:Jake brake or not?

Thanks. Just took a look at the BD brake. Looks good but really expensive. Will see what Rod can do for me.

They all do the same thing - there's probably not a lot (if any) difference between them.

Re:Jake brake or not?

c5racer, To answer your question about working range of the exhaust brake is, they work best at higher RPM's. The max braking is around 2500 RPM's but this doesnt mean that it doesnt work below that! One thing you have to remember is that when you tow you generally drive in the upper RPM range because thats where the motor wants to be. I thought the same thing you probably do, who drives around at 2400-2500 RPM just to make the exhaust brake usable? When you get one you will soon understand what everyone is talking about. Good luck.

Reading all the previous posts makes me curious about how my Cummins sounds at 3,000 RPM's.

I guess I'm just not used to the sound of a diesel at work??

I guess my question is; is it okay to rev a Cummins near redline for extended periods? After all, 3,000 is pretty close to the max.
Thanks. ;D

Hold it to the floor all day long.
That's where these engines like it.
It won't hurt it a bit.

3000 RPM's untill the tank is empty!!!! ;D

Re:Jake brake or not?

The more I look at exhaust brake systems the more I am inclined to go to the US Gear brake. Their system appears to work at the lowest RPM's of all the various manufacture's. Really like their bypass idea. Now am looking for a good price.
Anybody out there actually use one?

Re:Jake brake or not?

The only reason that I have not purchased one is that I will end up with minimum exhaust diameter of 4" including the turbo. So I will need a 4" brake and don't think it would be good to hook up at this time, maybe two reducers for now.
