Jake brake or not?
Jake brake or not?
Will I need a jake brake to whoa the rig down or can I downshift and get some braking? If I can downshift, what rpms can the cummins tolerate? Had a gasser motorhome before, so I'm new to deisels.
My sig has all the info.

Get the brake. It is not technically a "Jake" brake. It is an exhaust brake. It makes all the difference in the world when on grades or even coming down off the interstate. Run a search on EBrake, or exhaust brake. There has been some extensive discussion about the unit on this forum.

At red line (max rpm) all day long.

I have had two a pacbrake and a b&d brake both did jnot preform as i would have liked thusly i think it was wasted money my two conts worth and i wish that was all it cost me :'( :'( Glenn
Re:Jake brake or not?
I strongly suggest having an exhaust brake. If you use your brakes at all while coming off a hill then you should have one. They are a must for towing heavy unless you like the thrill ride of your trailer shoving you down the road faster then you are willing to go! I experienced that a few times then got with the picture. I now use it for daily driving and for warm ups. I think its well worth the money, if for any reason the safety of controling your speed. And not to be jumping to conclusions but anyone who can order two sweet rides like that at the same time can afford one. ;D ;D ;D
Re:Jake brake or not?
My 5er is a lot less heavy than yours (see my sig), and I wouldn't tow without my Jacob's EBrake. It really does make a tremendous difference when towing. I don't know about the other EBrakes like PAC or B&D, but my Jacob's perfroms flawlessly, and was the best money I spent for towing options.

The Jacob's works with the who;e range of your engine.

Let me expand on Gramps statement - - the brake is the opposite of accelleration. The lower the gear, the more you feel the accelleration. Likewise the brake, the lower the gear, the more holdback. You really feel it above 2000 rpm. Coming off the interstate on the off ramp, I can bring the whole rig down to where the brakes are only needed for the last 20 or 30 mph and still not be a pain to those behind me.

At 3000 rpms that jacobs brake is awesome. If you are towing, cars will think your brake lights arent working when going down hills. Pretty amazing. Would never own another truck without one.

Curious, will the cummins have any engine braking at 3000 RPMS with out the E brake?

Works for me... Brake is better though...

Re:Jake brake or not?
It will brake, but not very fast down hills. It is nowhere like a gas engine. When you turn on the jake at 3000 r's, it will throw you forward when empty. Through the mountains in alaska, I can drive without even using my brakes with the camper and trailer behind that. Around 10k lbs. If you are considering one, find someone that has one and go for a ride. You will not think twice.
