How Hot are hubs supposed to get?

I felt my hubs today after pulling about 300 miles. THis i son my 2007 LQ horse trailer. Very little braking etc.. Trailer is almost new.. Just wondering that the general "OK" limit is when you reach down and grab the hub as far as heat is concerned. THanks!

Just a good side of the road rule of thumb that's I've always been taught is if you can hold your hand on them they're ok, but if they're too hot to touch, they're gettin too hot.

I use a IR thermometer to check tire and hub temps on my 5th wheel. I usually find the hubs to be cooler than the tires and always no more than warm to the touch unless I've used the brakes quite a bit just before stopping.

I wonder who is going to get "smacked" at the dealer for not packing/checking the bearings before delivery.

Thanks godness nothing happened.

Did they change the bearings and race's, or just pack it with grease and call it all set?

Thanks,

Tim

They inspected everything and nothing was damaged. I had it fixed at an independent shop and then had the bill sent to the dealer. I guess they didn't get THAT hot. SO they replaced the bearings and repacked.. They had parts everywhere! LOL

Good deal, didn't want to see you with a major failure while you were haulin loaded, (or m/t).

BTW, if you travel on interstate with very little braking hubs should be cold or lukewarm.
Only with heavy mountain towing you will get them hot due to heavy brake use, but otherwise if they are hot at touch it's a sign something is wrong.

I did have some mountain driving for a ways. I went from southern Calif on I-10 to Buckeye, AZ. About 300 miles. There is that place just before Indio where your brakes can get hot. I didn't think much of it then, but they were still hot when i got home, so glad it is taken care of.
