How capable are the new automatic trans
I pull a gooseneck trailer with a 02' 6 spd manual, most of the time I am grossed out between 26000 to 32000 lbs(total weight) . I have to manage the heat frequently(hills and such) but the truck pulls it alright. I have been thinking of upgrading to a 07 auto (so the wife can drive sometimes) but am wary of how the automatic trans will hold up to this kind of work load. Is there anybody out there pulling this kind of load with an auto(03-07 truck)? Or anybody that knows if the stock auto trans(03 -07) will hold up to this or what kind of mods would need to be done or recommended to make it hold up to this kind of work, or am I just being unreasonable? Thanks all.

From what I have read though, the aftermarket(is it DTT and ATS?) make bullettproof tranny modifications to handle major power mods and heavy loads. They are pricey though.
Pulling that kind of weight you would be better off with a 6 speed manual. I have the 48re and it does O.K.. I hate the TC. Loaded up to about 20,000lbs Gross weight it is terrible taking off. Once going it is fine. From a standstill on a hill it will rev very high before it starts moving. It's the sorry fluid coupling the stock TC has. That's the only thing I don't like about it.
I have not had any problems with my 2006 48re. Since I added the Jake brake it has also changed the shift patterns a little. I can't tell you how much I like the 06 better than my 04.5 .. My brother just bought an 03 with 6 speed and after driving it I can see that the way it is geared that it would probably handle moving extreme loads better. I can't say how the clutch would hold up. I am sure the 6 speed auto with the 07.5 is going to be a blast.

Well maybe we'll all be lucky and D/C will build and let us test a prototype. Looks like they'd have at least a few sales right away.
