Min amount to get a us dot number is 750k liability, cargo ins is not required by anf govt but by the people you haul for.. I got 2.50 a loaded mile when i was hotshoting and that was all the way to june of this year.. There is a lot of it going on around the oilfield areas, i am in the in the oilfild now in directional drilling and dont have to hotshot anymore.. If you dont have a 1 ton and at least a 35 ft trailer then it will be very hard to get any hauling jobs.. You arent gonna get rich doing it tho

rich is correct on the $750k, it's a million if your hauling haz mat. Which anyting with a fuel tank is now classified as haz mat, just doesnt need to be placard. (per FMSCA) Good eqt., good people skills and $$ managment are big keys to this game. Try to find a niche and set up for it. And don't be afraid to ask for a fair price, don't let the "pay for fuel" BS from a broker suck you in, it'll become a habit and you just wont last long on those rates.
