GVW > Ford Vs Dodge 3500 SRW
Can anyone shed some light on the disparity between Ford and Dodge on the GVWR ?? The rating for the Dodge makes it a bit challenging to match it to a 5er. The Dodge is rated 9900 and the Ford is at 12,500. With a rear axle rating of 6150 it just seems like their limiting this vehicle a bit. It leaves the Dodge I really want with a payload value of only 2560 lbs. Anyone know if they plan on updating specs with the release of the 325/600?
Thanks in advance.......

The Dodge's rear axle is actually rated to about 11,000... It's the tires that kill it... they're rated at 3195 each which is the best you can get in a 17" tire. I think Ford still has 16" rims (== worse brakes) but you can get Load range F and G in a 16" tire.

It's the tires !! I missed that.......
Thanks for the information. I just couldn't figure out why it was rated so low. Too bad..... makes the numbers on this truck a real challenge to work with. Probably will make resale lower as well to educated buyers. They probably don't offer a 16" rim option either.
Didn't want a dually, but it's starting to look like I have no choice with Dodge. I may just go drive the furd and check em out.....

Well the sticker does say that its the axle that maxes out at 6000, but if you go to the manufacturer of Dodge's axles (used to be Dana, now AAM) they'll tell you its 11,000.
In my opinion (many will disagree) on a new Ram, ignoring the numbers that Dodge puts on the door sticker (its a lot of marketing if you ask me) in reality what it comes down to is with the stock tires you don't want to put much more than 3400# payload including fuel, passengers, your junk, your tongue weight, etc. or else you will be reaching the max tire capacity (stock rear weight is about 3000#).
There is no 16" wheel/tire option because the rotors are so big. I'll guess with confidence that a new Dodge will outbrake a Ford or a Chevy...
Be careful with that new Ford 6.0 !!!

I will be switching out the stock 17's for rickson 19.5's to get into a much better choice in tires and load capacities. The stock tires aren't to bad in the snow but I want to get into a much more aggresive tread.

I did some looking on Ford's site and think that maybe you were confused by their numbers, it is not set up very well. They don't list the GVW any where that I can find.
But on their towing specs it lists the GCVW of 20,000 and a trailer weight of 12,500 (think that is where you got the 12,500 from.

OK for anyone that ever said Dodge site was bad, you have never tried to use Fords!!!
Not only is it hard to find anything, it is slooowwww
But any ways I did find what you need.
The GVW for a 3500 single wheel is 9,900 unless you are in CA then it is 9,700 - What is with that?
Here it is

Aack !! You're correct......
It appears I got the wrong number and the GVWs for both vehicles are identicle. I was really bending the old brain trying to figure out why there would be such a difference. AND if there truly had been..... in this world of specsmanship..... how they could compete or market it. So....
It's a set of training wheels....
No way around it...
Thanks ALL !!!
