Yes there are many class 8 trucks still with double axles weighing in at 80,000lbs and they are getting 7-8mpg. They just do everything right and watch there rpm and speed. Then when you pull one of the axles the milage really gets better, just depends on what you are pulling. Most of the single axle class 7 and 8 trucks can get an honest 8mpg.

I have gotten 8 in my 1-ton pulling only 3 cars!

No sense spending $60k+ for to light a truck.

I find that hard to believe, a class 8 truck unloaded (bobtail) does not get 14mpg. I just pulled a 37ft Carriage 5th wheel from Goshen, In to West Palm Beach, FL and avg over 10mpg. I avg a pretty consistent 14 running a 50/50 mix of loaded and unloaded. As far as stopping, if the trailers brakes are adjusted and the brake controller is set correct it should not be a problem.

My brother in-law has a mid 90's Freightliner and me with a load of 3 cars on gets better mileage than he does with an empty trailer granted his doesnt go down like any when he has 7 cars on but even still in the summer if I take it easy with my MPH's and it isnt a really windy day I get get around 12 MPG pulling 3 cars around where as no matter what my brother in-law gets about 6 MPG MAX with his big truck yes he does have 2 axles still but he has even done some things for better fuel mileage since he was getting around 4 MPG at times.

It all depends on how much you want to tow now its kind of give or take if I have 6 cars somewhere it takes me 2 trips where as it only takes him one so mileage works out to be around the same TIME is where it really kills me though more miles and more times for the same amount of work. BUT if we only had 3 cars somewhere it would be more of a waste for him to go and get them over me.

It really is give or take maintenence is cheaper on a 1 ton over a big truck but then again you dont have as much with a big truck. For me a 1 ton is fine with the work we have its nice having a 1 ton with a 3 car trailer and well to be honest I cant afford a big truck and a 7 car trailer...lol

I gotta say, I find it a bit scary thinking of your average Joe Bluehair buying a full size tractor to pull his RV with no formal training (CDL). Here in Florida, it's scary enough watching them drive a class A motorhome. I sure can't see them climbing under their tractor trailer checking slack adjusters before making a road trip.

Here's a scenario: Joe Bluehair and family descending a grade on I-40 in N.C., getting his 13 speed road ranger caught between gears. Look out below!

I am with you on that one. Especially since so many of them only no one speed and thats seems to be foot to the floor. Just last week I was running 70mph south on I75 and one came by me and scared the heck out of me. A few miles u the road I pulled into the rest area and there him and his wife were. My guess was 80 plus years old.

Oh I know I have had several bluehairs blow past me like I was nothing only to later see them at a truck stop getting out of their BUS with a full blown walker! Kinda scares you when you think "They drive amoung us"

Saw one in South Carolina on I-26 south of Columbia blow a front tire at something like 80 on a class A. Flipped that sucker on it's side and left a fiberglass streak on the road for about a quarter mile.
