Edge towing heavy this weekend..

I will take my 2003 and Edge over Hyw 20 ( North Cascades in Wa state) this weekend. I will be towing 13,500lbs. This is a 125 mile trip over some long 8-9% grades. I am setting my Edge on setting 1. Anyone else use higher setting when towing heavy? My egt probe in post turbo and last time I towed at highway speeds it never reached 700. Driving on the highway without the 5er I see about 375-450.

Add about 250-300 degrees to your pyro temp to give an actual EGT. I tow a lot, but I live in relatively flat Illinois. My work trailer runs about 6000lbs. and cruising at 60mph my EGT is running about 600-650 degrees; maybe a bit more if it's real hot out. I have seen 1000 degrees coming up out of some of the river bottoms, but nothing like what you will see out there as far as length and steepness of grade. I almost always keep my Juice on level 2 whether towing or not. Have never had to down shift out of 6th to help cool the EGT's. Don't know about the EZ except what I have read here. I think they tend to run the EGT's a little hot. Hopefully someone will chip in on that.

That said, just watch your gauges and adjust, if necessary, to what they say. Happy towing!!

I can easily hit 700-900 degrees post turbo when towing.

heavy tow, low egt..

So I went over a 4500' pass with some 8% grades and when running between 20- 25 lbs boost the hightest egt I saw was 750, post turbo. Just seems low. I am not complaining but want to make sure it's correct. I even sent my x monitor to BD for calibration and they said it was reading right. As I recall, when I made the same run last year I hit 900.

I see the same effect when I tow heavy.

Pulling my 16k GVW Fifthwheel I usually see about 1000-1050 pre-turbo pulling long hills.

When I'm running around empty I can hit 1200+ in some situations.

Got to love that CTD though,
running about 24k GCVW at 60-65 mph up a 5 mile hill, big rigs laboring in the far right lane. A/C blowing on max. Looking down at your gadges and seeing

Trans- 145 deg.
EGT - 1050 F.
Coolant temp- 190F
Fuel press - 15 psi+
Rear Diff temp- 135 F.
Boost- 32 psi

And it will do it all day long!

Pre Turbo temps can vary alot more than 200-350 degrees from Post Turbo. I have seen Post Turbo up to 850 and Pre Turbo at 1200. The POst Turbo can run as much as 500 degrees cooler than the Pre Turbo temps. It all depends on what you are doing, ie how much fuel you dumping in the cyclinders.
I would check into getting a Pre Turbo pyrometer also especially if you are towing heavy.

I have always run my EZ on level 4. Pulling up to 38,000# Gross. Only time the egts get close to a problem is in 5th gear at high rmps when getting up to speed. I can hold the pedal on the floor in 6th at 65mph up a hill and it will hang about 1150 degs.
