towing heavy

Most will think I'm on drugs but I need to know if my truck will be able to handle an additional 30000 LBS. I am guessing no but would like to see if anyone else has ever done such a feat and how it went. See my sig. for what I have. As well I just got an Edge EZ which I will disconnect for such a load as I have no guages yet. Remember this is just trailer and load weight. I will be going 1600 km round trip.

Re:towing heavy

BTW please do not get into all the legal crap about towing and different classes of permits needed. I live in Alberta Canada way up north and will not be driving in any heavy traffic. Trust me nobody cares about being overweight up here.

You might be able to get it moving. :...but how are ya planning on stopping?
That is grossly overloaded.
I'd look at renting a rig to pull it before I'd attempt it with my personal rig.

JMHO

Re:towing heavy

i don't think you want to do that only because you will be way overloaded and the new fines for that in this province as of may 20 are really inflated. just because you don't have to cross a scale those dot trucks are everywhere now. they will pull you over and force you to go to the nearest scale and weigh you and you pay.

Without getting into the legal ramifications, which I think you would be VERY unwise to ignore, it's just flat out not a good idea. Like goofball said....you MIGHT get it moving, but how the heck will you stop it?? Personally...having a driven a tandem axle flatbed with a 30,000+ pound load of lumber on the bed on lots of occasions in college....I can tell you it's hard to stop that much weight....even with equipment that's DESIGNED for it like I had. I wouldn't do it. I wouldn't even consider it.

What are you trying to haul anyway??

"Trust me nobody cares about being overweight up here." I can think of a couple who do care, 1) your Insurance Company, 2) The Guy you are following. Even if you can get that load moving it would be difficult to stop in an emergency. With a load that much over rated capacities your insurance could be voided. Your premiums are not paying for the liability you would have towing that kind of rig. If any warranty is remaining on the truck, it wouldn't be after that tow.

GCW of about 37.5K#? NO WAY, JOSE.

Safe Tongue Wts:
I Don't see anything regarding hitch equipment.

Tag-Along trailer is out of question since it would have a tongue wt. of 3000# or more. Class IV hitch limit of 1000#.

Goose-Neck/5er tongue weight for 30,000# should be 4500# to 6000#.
Oh, Squat, sittin on the axles! Towin that for 800 km one way is bound to bend if not break something on them spring pot-holes.

Re:towing heavy

You'd have to have a 30,000 lb trailer, or close to it. Most "big" trailers i've seen for pick up trucks are 20,000lb. If you use a 20,000lb trailer, you'd be over 10,000 over weight. Something would fail on the trailer. The truck would pull it, but the you better have a good brake controller and good trailer brakes. You'd be better off to make a couple of trips. How far is 1600km in miles? The most I've ever hauled is 24,000lbs for 350 miles. It was tough to stop, and the hills killed me.

Re:towing heavy

Ok as straight up a possible. The engine will pull it no problem. If you can stop or not will depend on the brakes on the trailer. I pull up to 32,000 gross weight and I can tell you that you are pushing the limits a long way. you are talking about 38,000 or so. If you loaded real careful, you might get away with it. Loaded correctly you will be putting 7500 pounds on the rear axle. Add to that the 3000 for the empty truck, maybe a little less. If you can get it loaded with 10,000 rear axle weight and the brakes on the trailer will handle the trailer end, you can do it. With the 4.11 gears and the six speed the truck will pull fine.

Now guys, go ahead and tear me up

Re:towing heavy

That's roughly 1,000 miles (994.1939 to be exact). I'd either make several trips or find a truck capable of handling those loads.

When do you plan on doing this?
I'm in Edmonton if you're coming this way (what other way is there from McMoney?).
I pull a 30 ft. goose neck grossed out at 16000 KG. Please don't even consider doing it in one load. If the tanks are coming from Edmunchuk drop me a PM or write me at reidstr(nospam)@telus.net and I'll give you a hand if I can. Remove the (nospam) in the e-ddress.

Where do you get "nobody cares about being over weight up here. Do you think you are the only guy from Alberta on this site. The DOT bought a whole bunch of Pickups with portable scales just to teach people like you a lesson.
Jim O

Re:towing heavy

I'm not really responding to this post but a few months ago I saw a Dodge truck hooked up to a gooseneck with HUGE logs on it. Probably 2/3 the load of a semi size trailer. The triple axle trailer tires were showing strain and the truck tires in the back were too. Not as bad as the trailer though. It was squated down a bit but wasnt a dually either. I wanted to ask the driver how much wieght he had on there but couldnt find him. It was in a parking lot. I wish I had a camera. It was amazing to think that these trucks could pull that kind of load. I'm guessing it was around 30,000-35,000lb in wood logs!!! If not more. And I dont think there was any mods because there was no gauges and exhaust was stock. Not that that says anything but I would think if you pulled huge loads like that with engine modifications you would be smart enough to have some gauges.
Like I said I have no comment about Holycacks situation, just talking.

I ran 30,000 pound loads for 100,000 miles with my '99 bone stock and single wheeled. Only breakdown was the clutch center gave out.

Home made trailers so over-loaded and mis-loaded with frame on axle on one side. Picks are vintage Ferds usually, 1960s era. (I guess the local law forgives them cause they lack the intelligence to know better.) One had his truck bed so so over-loaded tires were rubbin the fenders and smokin.

Then one time I came around a corner and found this guy sinnin in the middle of the road, blood runnin down his forehead, groaning and holding his head. He was incoherent. He sas too big to drag off the road so I parked my truck with flashers on to give him some protection. In a few minutes his buddies came driving up in an old,Yep, Ferd Ranger, belching smoke. They were looking for him, each with a bottle of brew in hand. The top of their load was at least 10 ft high. They wanted to load their fallen buddy in the truck and leave. He was groanin to much to be cooperative.

I was finally found out their fallen buddy had been riding on top of the load. What caused him to fall??? It was a hot day, 95+, they had been drinkin Bud all day to keep their cool. The combination of brew and heat and that swaying load may have caused him to pass out. Why was he on top of the load. The three of them were too much to fit in the cab. Man, that truck was over-loaded in more way than one can imagine.

Well they finally were able to drag and stuff their groaning buddy into the cab. I took the license # and called it into 911. reporting the condition of their buddy. He was in bad need of medical attention.
People do stupid things when it comes to the loads they haul.
