Re:Camper carrying

Just for comparison purpose my 3500 weights with almost empty fuel and me sittin in it 6680 lbs no tailgate...then I add for fuel 130 gals X 7.1 = 923 lbs (I have a aux tank) plus all the chains and binders I carry in my tool box

I think everyone that hauls anything should know the weight of their truck as a starting point...gravel pits and farmers elevators are a source of free truck weighting as long as you don't want a certified ticket

Scaled my truck, camper, and 19 foot alum. boat last weekend. Always knew it was heavy but it totaled 16,500.

Biglar, I run things I call spring slippers on the upper overload spring. Same sort of idea as yours, preloads the spring and seems to steady things up some. Might try to add a hockey puck down where you run yours.

Let me know how it works for you. I'm also curious if anyone else has tried the spring blocks ?? They sure work good for me. Re:Camper carrying

Harrrr.............the temptation to be a smart-*** is really strong, but I'll resist it - since I'm such a nice guy. :-) The expression "4x4" originally came from "4 wheel drive; 4 speed transmission." My Big Blue Bomb is a 4 wheel drive with a SIX speed tranny............sooooo.........4x6. Lar.
Okay, BigLar, what is a 2500 4x6?
Re:Camper carrying

;D ;D Seems to me that both ways make sense, so let's both be right. :-) Lar.
Okay BigLar...me and you must have been raised in different parts of the world. The term 4X4 refers to 4 tires and wheels X 4 tires and wheels under power. 4X2 refers to 4 tires and wheels X 2 tires and wheels under power. So a 4X6 don't fit. And you can be a smart#*+ if you want to......I'm so stupid you can't hurt my feelings.
Re:Camper carrying

Biglar, I made some of your type blocks, left the stock puck in place to help hold position plus side plates. They seem to help but the slippers might be more effective for me. I need some time to try them both in different conditions and also both in combination. I'll let you know after awhile.

Re:spring slippers

Raften can you tell me more about these spring slippers. Are they home made or store bought?
Thanks, Jim in Co

Re:Camper carrying

Jim in CO, the slippers are homemade. The name slippers is just something I call them because they go on an overload free end like a slipper on a foot. Even with my camper, the overloads barely touch the pads that transfer weight onto the springs. With the slipper on the free end the spring can carry more of the weight as they were designed to. They are made of aluminum and drilled and tapped to allow thicker "soles" to be added to compress the spring even more. They work well for me and I made some for someone else and he liked them. They also allow me to run less PSI in the air bags. Hope you can get a mental picture of how these things look. Really need to get a digital camera someday.

Re:Camper carrying

Raften I have a good mental pic of what they look like. How much to make me a set. Do you put them on the front and rear pads? My lance 835 is just not heavy enough to sqwat the truck to the overloads. I have about an inch before it hits. I never thought I would say my camper is to light for my truck (kindof nice).
Thanks
jim in Co

Re:Camper carrying

Jim in CO, we have the same truck so I would not need any measurments. I can make some for you but first I need to mod mine just a bit to prevent some rubbing to make sure of the design. Do you have one or two overload leafs? Some of the earilier '01's had two but DC decided no one really carries anything so why not get rid of one. Give me a week or two and I will figure out a price. I make them out of alum. to keep weight down. You can also think of these things as a knife sheath that the spring fits in and one side of the sheath is alot thicker. Do you want to send me your email address? No problem if you don't want to post it.
