Any of you guys ever hit the cab?
With a shortbed pulling a 5er with a Pullrite Superglider? I am just trying to get a feel for how well they really work. I have heard great things, but are they REALLY as efficient as a longbed with a 5th Wheel hitch? Thanks guys!
I pull bot 5th wheel and GN with my shortbed, been in some tight turns, have never hit the cab. I think half of the reason I have not hit the cab is because I pay attention and know how much room it takes to maneuver, when things are getting close I am watching closely. I have seen guys with 8' beds hit the cabs or cab fairings, so really it is somewhat a matter of paying attention.
This past summer, I installed Pop Up offsets on my trailers, sets them back right at the hitch/ball. I decided to install the for the extra foot of space between the truck and trailer and just in case I got into a really tight place where that foot would make a difference in clearance.

Whats HAR? You must have a power slider. When I had my Kaufmann wedge I could get it cut up to 90 degrees, you must really be making some tight turns!
The new trailers I have been pulling all have the cropped corners now so I have not even used my slider. I guess either with an older trailer or having to do some real tight parking in a campground it may be useful.
I can not hit the cab. I have to do a 90 to back into my drive. If you are trying to do more than a 90 you are not turning you are trying to slide the trailer sideways ( that is not going to happen with a heavy trailer). My long bed friends will not even try to make some of the turns I make.
Downside to a superglide is: You must connect within 12 degrees of striaght on. You can not connect backing in from an angle. Which means you need more room to hitch and unhitch. There is a way to cheat to unhitch but remember you are going to need the room to hitch back up.
BTW: I have the extended pin. My trailer came with the extended pin and most do have the extended pin however there are some older trailers that the pin comes straight down.

Thanks guys...this is good stuff. I think that a Superglide will be in my future. Expensive, but if you hit the cab even once, you're already paying the extra money between a regular 5th and the Superglide to fix your cab. I don't think that I would really plan on doing more than 90 degrees EVER and I have pretty open spacing for loading and unloading at the house and I would assume that most camp grounds have adequate space as well...
I did
Yes i did the bad thing. Very large lot, turning truck and 34ft 5er around. Short box 03 2500. Now i knew i was getting close, but didn't need to turn any tighter so i thought i would be allright.
Also i did not slide my hitch back, had it in the forward position.
I would have been allright except the lot was gravel. As i made the turn camper wheels went over a large bump and made the 5er lurch forward. Smashing my cab and one part of the rear sliding window. Had to replace complete window and another $1200 in body and paint work.
Oh well all good plans sometimes well ... just aren't good.

FYI: I like my superglide but there is one more downside. You can high hitch were the release arm will snap in and the jaw close but you will not be locked around the pin. You have to look at the jaw to make sure it is locked around the pin. Some paint the pin a contrasting color to make it easier to tell if you are locked in.

It all depends on the 5ver and how sharp of a turn your trying to make.
