89 dump truck

Just received this truck. Not sure of what my capacity is. Its a auto 3spd, reg. cab with dump, dually. Unknowingly, I loaded it up with too much soil, drove it to dumping area, then the bed wouldn't dump, too heavy. I had to have the loader come up next to me and help the dump bed up.

Any educated guesses to capacity.

thanks

Had you used the dump with lighter loads ? There could be several reasons for the hoist not lifting such as being low on hydraulic fluid or a weak pump . I assume it's a 1 ton . Your gvwr is probably around 10,000 lbs . The weight of the bed , hoist , etc. will reduce the payload capacity . Put the truck on scales empty then subtract that weight from 10,000 to get your load capacity . The gvwr of newer trucks is much more than 10,000 but I believe that is what it would be on your truck . Yes , it could haul more but you risk breaking something .

Check with your local dot, sometimes they can be real friendly and other times not. Here in California, the home of regulation, that truck would be good up to 15,000. why? Because with an altered bed the man goes by tire weight rating. Plus it cost more to insure and register. Check and make sure your hydralic system is up to par as stated above. For max life of the frame, only the 6 " varitey, your going to want to reinforce it, we have an 82 ford f350 with a 12' dump, 3rd dead 400, brutally abused for almost 20 years, with the frame wrapped, and the frame is probally the only thing holding this pos together. Did you tinker with the VE? You had a post a couple weeks ago about low power, any luck? Keep us updated, with pics if you can, I love 1ton dumps.

Saw a '58 Ford dump for sale yesterday. Bigger than a 350 though. Wonder if it had a 292 or a 330. It would definitely be slow on take off but probably has a two speed rear end.

yeah, same guy here with the low power issues. my hood is still stuck closed. been trying to get that done...weather here is a factor. with the dump, I've had dumped more than several loads with no issues. Just overloaded on two or three occasions. Yes, its a one ton truck. dual rears, similar to my 01. same springs set up too. I've put in my 01 over 4000lbs....drove 40miles with it. ok ride. not something I liked. kinda have to keep alert.

thanks
