7 pin connector location

I was wondering how many people have added an additional 7 pin connector in the bed of their truck for 5'er towing?

Also, how many are using the stock 7 pin location under the bumper? How did you make the camper wiring longer and how do you keep it off of the tailgate?

Tim

Tim,
The 7 pin on my truck is moved to the bed, just behind the wheel wells. If I had it to do again, I would go in front of the wheel well for easier access.

I made up a jumper for my boat trailer to run from the bed under the tailgate and have eliminated the rear plug entirely.

Bill

Re:7 pin connector location

I bought my 96 used and it already had the in-bed 7 pin as well as the bumper location. My gooseneck wiring is setup for the bumper so I use the in-bed to connect the revolving beacon that I sometimes run.

The bumper location also allows me to plug in all of the different tag-along trailers I pull occasionally.

Re:7 pin connector location

Right now I plug my 5th wheel into the factory harness, but I did order a 7-pin connector to install in the bed.

Looks like it should be a pretty clean and easy install.

EDIT: Ordered from http://www.etrailer.com

I like that etrailer.com place. I've ordered several items from them...all with good results and relatively fast shipping.

Re:7 pin connector location

I took the factory plug out of the bumper and replaced it with a 7 pin with a 4 pin next to it. (maybe a hoppy brand?) That way I don’t have to get under the bumper to reach the 4 pin when I need it. The Hoppy came with a 4 pin connector that I plugged into the factory 4 pin connector on the truck. I then cut off the factory plug and used that wire to hook up the plug mounted in the bed. The only wires that had to be split were the brake signal, backup and power lead. Everything else got it’s own individual wire. Took about 45 minutes to do. The hoppy plug even lined up to use the existing bolt holes in the bumper.

http://www.trailerwiring.com

Part # 47185

Does this look like the one you got?? I've been thinking of doing something very similar.

Re:7 pin connector location

I decided to buy a 7' extension and just run the cable over the tailgate and down to the factory plug. I am going to cover the cable with water pipe foam insulation to make sure it doesn't rub the tailgate.

I bought it from hitch finder for $27.50 plus shipping (part # 20027).

Thanks for the replies,

Tim

Re:7 pin connector location

Hoss, that is it. The hole in the bumper is a large enough circle to accept the slightly larger plug. I had to trim about a 1/32" off of the black plastic cover on the bumper. Then it lined right up and bolted in. Hooked up the 4 prong connector and spliced the brake stuff.

Re:7 pin connector location

BTW, I think I paid 19.95 at autozone or advance. Those parts houses all seem to run together any more.

Re:7 pin connector location

Hoss,

I have a drop in bed liner and cut my holes for my gooseneck hitch and with this there is enough room in the drivers side rear bed liner to put a standard female plug in. Get the reese Y connector for your normal lights and run wire up the drivers side tail light and through a hole at the top into the bed. Run lines from the connector to the 7 pin standard hitch connector and splice in for hot and brake liness and last run a new ground.

Here is what it looks like done.
https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...9&pid=1078

Hope this helps. Many, many, many miles. I don't think you will have a problem with rub through.
