Why "/dev"?

Why "/dev"?
Just wondering why the folder that the actual forum software is located in is called "dev", and not something like "forum" or "forums"?

Wow...I don't think I've ever seen anyone run out of stuff to read here enough to start reading the URL.
Maybe dev was the directory being tested with and Jack decided just to go straight to production with it since it was working well. I know that happens with my customers more often then you would think.
