If we can tell what you mean from what you typed, we consider it the same as posting the actual word.

As far as quoting a post - I'm not gonna give points for that, although I'd probably send the person a PM asking them to read more carefully before they quote.

Simply put, the asterisks in this case suggest a profane meaning and as such they are an infraction, or not allowed on the forum. The way I would moderate this situation is to warn the original offender and edit it out of the quote from the follow up poster as he likely did not even see it.

Now on the other hand, if it is a quote from another forum or website that is copy and pasted by a member, it is treated as an original quote and would be an infraction. We are all responsible for what we bring to this forum.

Obviously there has to be intent in order for a situation like this to become an infraction. The second user, (PJ) in this particular scenario was merely answering the question and did not intend to repeat the offensive word. It was automatically reproduced when he used the quote function and as such no intent to post an offensive word.

I hope this clears things up a little better
Seems I spoke too soon. Sorry for the confusion, folks. We'll go with Lary's interpretation of the rules.

I am not going to lie, this infraction system has got to be the biggest load of junk. I hear words in church that are worse than you allow on here. Would you not take your children to church to a restaurant or ANY public place so they can't hear words that are in everything that you read or hear nowadays. I am not even talking about actual profanity, just actual words. You need to re adjust your "profanity" rule to ACTUAL "g" rated terms, I have heard words in G rated movies that are worse than what I have seen changed on here.

And don't you have to be 18 to be on this site?

This doesn't make much sense at all!

Sorry if you think I am being rude, but that really annoys be that I can't even post a different term for urinating without getting an infraction!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You agreed to the rules before you made your first post. Just because you didn't read them is not the fault of those that run this site. Don't like it??????

1. You are being rude
2. If you don't like it, you can leave.
3. See number 2. We've been running the site like this from day one and I will not veer from the primary reasons for starting this site in the first place.

This is the way it is and this is the way it will stay. You can either adjust and follow the rules like the 34,000 other members, or go find something more to your liking.

I have watch this "different term" creep into everyday vocabulary over the last few yrs.... TV....Radio....Schools....my children. It is offensive to me in public or mixed company. I also see many high paid broadcasters dropping G's on words like 'comin...goin....doin....seein...etc. I find that just as offensive to the ears. (though not the subject of this thread).

My point is our language is slowly being butchered by sloppy usage and profanity. I very much like the fact that this site takes a hardline stand on all unacceptable words! If nothing else, it's good practice for us all. Just my $.02

We don't own all those other places you speak of, so how they choose to deal with profanity is up to them and none of our business

No you do not have to be 18. Federal law prohibits anyone under 13 yrs of age unless we get a note from the parents allowing the child to be here. No matter what the age of any member on this forum, we expect you to show them respect by controlling your language on this forum. Simply put we have Women and Children reading these forums and we choose to keep this forum friendly for them as well.

Now this we do agree on, your complaint makes absolutely no sense. You agreed to the Forum rules when you signed up here and by doing so you and I entered into a contract of sorts.

As long as you do your part by respecting the forum rules in your posting habits, I will do my part and continue to provide you with this excellent resource completely FREE OF CHARGE That is a very good deal, don't you think?

Your apology for being rude is accepted

You did not receive a infraction, you received a WARNING which is intended to remind you of the forum rules so you can change your posting habits and avoid receiving a infraction in the future.

As to why you feel the need to share anything about "Urinating" with the rest of us, is entirely beyond me and I have no answer for that issue. Perhaps there are websites better suited to discuss "Urination" and any problems you may be dealing with in that area.

I might suggest WEBMD..they are a very good source of info for health related issues of all kinds. Best Wishes! I hope you get to feeling better soon!

So using your example below...

Say Jack and Lary decided that the word "fluffy" was a bad word. If you typed in "fluffy" it would come out "******" because of the censor settings in the software.
...the asterisks replacing the word "fluffy" would still be against the rules and could lead to an infraction?

Absolutely, any use of asterisks in an attempt to alter a bad word is not acceptable. If the forum alters it because the filter caught it, it is still an infraction because it should never have been typed into this forum in the first place.

Pretty simple stuff here actually;

"Profanity will not be tolerated on this forum" This also means any attempts to disguise a word which we all know does not change the meaning or the intent.

If someone uses asterisks in an attempt to make a profane word acceptable then we know that person already knew the word did not belong here or they would not have bothered to use the asterisks

Since they knew it was wrong then the obvious solution is to NOT post it

Actually Chris I have NO patience for some of this stuff BUT I try simply because I don't want to lose "GOOD" members that simply don't understand what we are saying

Every now and then we run into those individuals that know dang well what we are saying, but they don't care or are just holding a grudge because they got dinged 1 time.

Those individuals try to push and push and eventually I end up tired of wasting my time with them, so I set them free to go enjoy another forum that better suits their individual needs.

We don't expect anyone to remain here if they do not agree with the forum rules, this is why they MUST physically agree to abide by the rules before registering on this site.

If they don't like the rules they should NOT agree to them and move on...This is better for all of us so we can concentrate on issues that really matter and avoid the need to call the Waaaambulance

I think it's amazing that a lot of folks let this thread deteriorate from a discussion about the infraction system to a discussion which word for which bodily function or effluence is to be deemed G, Y, or dark purple rated.
I think with a little common sense you can avoid using any foul language on the board.
If you got troubles with eg a dealer- you can as well write "This guy really made me mad" or "This guy is a perfect example for the evolution theory- too bad he stopped evolving when in the phase of being a monkey" etc. No need to invoke bodily functions or effluents.
Personally I do prefer to read informative posts here and sometimes witty comments and interesting stuff in the "other" section. I amo not interested in verbal battles that go down to a level where it's just a comptition who can type swearwords faster.
As a rule of thumb I try only to use words that I'd also use at a job interview.
I think many people do not realise that by posting something here they do effectively publish it. As soon as you publish something you do have no control on who reads it. The age limit concerns itself with being a member with posting privileges. Any guest can read every posting here.

Maybe we need this in the Forum Rules Agreement, Bodily Functions Subsection, TMI Paragraph:

"This is a G-rated site.
G stands for Gentleman.
Gentlemen perspire, flatulate, urinate, defecate, eructate and may even occasionally suffer from nocturnal emission.
If your body deviates from these normal functions, or in the event that you find it difficult or impossible to read or spell any of the above words - we invite you to reconsider your desire to become a member of this forum.
