superchips 3805 note

just thought i'd let you know something i heard today. called my dealer because two mornings in a row when i start my 05 2500 i have a rough idle that goes away as soon as you move the truck. dealer said that they had called cummins on this and they were told it was normal that they can do that for upto 15 min after start up, any truth to this please let me know. the next thing he said was if you have a chip or programmer (i didn't say a word i do have the 3805 set on tow perf.) that they will destroy these motors because they are already at their max. any input will help. i have the afe2 w/pro grd7 magna flow muffler and full gauges. i had the truck on the low setting (50 hp) but i returned it to stock just incase that is what's causing the rough idle, super chips said it isn't but we'll see what you guys say. thanks

Roc, How many miles do you have on your 05? If your truck is broken in and has had it regular service you should be OK. Get an oil analysis done at every oil change. I get mine done throught the local CAT dealer as they are the cheapest and fastest but alot of folks use Blackstone Labs. If you are getting excessive wear on internal parts that see oil it will show up. It will also tell if your air filtration is doing its job. IF all is ok then the superchip should be ok on low settings. I only use my box, a TST, on higher settings when I need it. Most time it is on higher mileage, timing only mode.
Note if you use a performance box and chip your truck may be worth less after 500,000 miles barely 25% of what you paid. I've got over 131k on my 03 most with a box. The flexplate broke and trashed the tranny but I tow very heavy. Lift Pump got weak but I got FASS. Other than that just regular maintenance with all synthetic lubes and good analysis. ks

thanks for the input. the truck has 5600 miles thats it. i've never even put it on the performance mode (100 hp and like 200 tq). of course superchips claims you can put it on performance and leave it there as a daily driver but i want someone with exp. to tell me that. any thoughts on the rough idle?

I was referring to the max horsepower comment. these engines are built to handle a crap load more hp.

about your rough idle, i would venture to say normal. no codes? has it been colder than normal? dump some additive in there or some injector cleaner.

rough idle

No worries on the idle.My 05 has done it since new,and long before the programmer. It seemed to do it on warmer mornings, when I probly didn't completely cycle the preheater.Even in warmer weather, make absolutely sure you don't hit the key till the little curly Q light goes off.It won't stop it completely but is a big help. Also our cranes I operate at work with Cummins power do the same thing on cold start-up.

Well this may help on the rough idle. I went in for service on my new 06 and they said it was not needed. I have seen guys talking about getting the new oild out of the new motor right away. I am going about 3000 miles in two weeks with a 9000lb TT and wanted to get the first service out of the way piece of mind and the new motor/oil thing. This is what my dealer said

First the service was not needed at 4000 miles and they recomended not doing it, they put that in writting on my service receipt. I asked about the additional high idle thing using the cruise control and he said it should ahve been on. It was not and they turned it on for free. He explained that my truck, I did not ask on others, when the temp are low will idle on 3 cyclinders unitl things get warm. This is also associated with the dimming of lights and grid heaters and all. He stated that the 3 cylinder thing is better on the cold motor at idle. Once you rev up or take off it uses all of them. The idle up feature using the cruise stops the 3 cylinder deal and warms the truck faster. He stated it was recomended by cummins.

This may be causing your rough idle situation. I am no expert first diesel and dodge so i am trusting my dealer. It sure is alot faster warm up with the high idle.

Your brand of oil can cause a rough idle. We did some testing and found that immediately when switching to Rotella that we had a rough idle. SOmething to think about anyway?

You sure about the 3 cyl.idle thing cold? Read many times that was NOT a 3g thing only 2nd gen 24 valve and programed to do so ? My 03 ran rough cold until the Rokktech sensor mod.Once injector timing advanced a little it smoothed out considerably.

just a note on the performance setting the power feels great. my only concern is again today the rough idle seemed to be worse than without it and i think i could smell diesel fumes not really sure what would be causing this. the reason i chose the superchips was for the speedo cal. i know the edge offers it but i already have gauges and really didn't want to have to look at another one for the corrected speed. the hp and tq increase was a benefit along with the dtc scan. i think i will go back to the tow/perf mode and try that. i was on that setting for about a month before the rough idle started. when it started i took the program out and returned to stk within two days i got a rough idle at stk but didn't seem to be as bad i don't know i could be paranoid. i downloaded the update from the computer for the 3805 but what i don't like is they don't post or tell you what the update is just that one is available. i sent them an email asking for what was changed and three days ago they sent back saying we will send you some info but nothing yet. if anyone else out there is running the 3805 and had some similar issues pls let me know. i also think that the shifting at low rpms say below about 1800 feel kind of like the truck is surging i don't know it just feels goofy.
