idiot question about connection

where I was working on the speedometer sensor, around here:

I notice how a tube is coming off and just...ends... about 2 feet later, like this:

what's up with that? is that supposed to just end like that? Do I need to connect that to something?

It's an air vent to equalize pressure in the housing. When the oil heats up the air does also and expands. Without the vent the oil will blow the seals out.

Not a terrible idea to clean that and the vent out once in a while. They can get sludged up and won't vent properly.

I just googled "axle breather air vents" and first up was on Amazon. They had a mix of different styles. The ones that slip onto a hose like in the OP's pic I would need a size of the hose on our trucks to find out which ones to get.

then they had ones that threaded right into an axle, and I would have to know thread pitch for those.

On my '90, the vent fitting actually holds down a junction block of the rear brake line...Mark

That's what mine exactly does on my 93. So, it's not just the actual vent up above that needs to be checked for any blockage, but mainly that threaded "hollow bolt" fitting.

I need to get one for my transfer case, as I noticed when I had it off last year I had no fitting, hose, nothing. With that said, if anyone happens to be under their truck in the vicinity of the NP205, would you mind grabbing the inside dimension of that rubber tube? I bet you it's the same size as the tubes at the Dana60/70. Thank you.

It would be tough to fannagle myself under there, along with a walker, lol! Wife would kill me for sure.

I've seen other set ups on other vehicle makes where the front axle's tube runs clear up into the engine compartment. I'll probably end up doing that, just as extra preventative maintenance.

Just a threaded hole into the transfer case???
I'll measure in the next few days when I'm under there finishing off my u-joint R&R if nobody does before then.

Thanks, KRB, but what your going to identify for me is just the size of the tubing that attaches to the transfer case vent spout. By knowing that, I'll know what size hose to get along with what size air vent I need. Those air vents I saw on Amazon for this application have barbed ends, to slip into hose.

You understand?

Oh yea I understood you need the ID of the hose. Was just verifying that you were missing everything and just had an open hole into the case right now?

Oh, okay, my bad. I still have that 90 degree fitting coming out of the transfer case, so just the hose I.D. is all that's needed.

Thank you
