Why not bypass fuel heater?
Why not bypass fuel heater?
I know the fuel heater on the 12v's can be a source of leaks and issues, so why not bypass it using a good filter such as a FASS and just run it straight from the pump to the IP or from the factory LP to the IP? Just something I've been thinking about.
this is something I was wondering about, I live in Montana and obviously it gets cold and I was wondering if the Air Dog 150 has a way to heat the fuel since I bypassed the the stock one does anyone know if this will be a problem?
Yeah but the FASS fuel heater is only going to work when the coolant is up to temperature, not when everything is 0*.
That being said, warmed fuel from the IP will return to the tank once the engine reaches temperature so its not necessary.
Back when I was running a holley blue with a prefilter, I got ahold of some bio and the temp. dropped. 10% bio will wax at 10* and plug a see-thru prefilter. Wound up heating the prefilter with a propane torch my buddy brought me to get the truck going and then used the diesel 911 stuff from power service. I now carry a quart of that stuff in the toolbox. They say a quart of 2 stroke per tank will stop gelling and add lubricity as well, and I find it to be true, as I never once gelled last year with NO fuel heater.

You won't have problems if run Montana's standard winter blend of No1/No2 or straight No1 when it gets down to -20*F. You can also add Power Service additive to the standard #2/#1 blend they sell and get your -20*F non-gelled starts.

I replaced the heater/strainer along with the filter assembly and went with a racor 490R with the heated bowl and WIF kit. So far Ive been happy with that.
I unplugged the heater and taped up the wiring then re-routed the hose and plugged the heater.

There are two separate issues with bypassing the heater which are the actual heating and the prefilter.
The heater is strategically placed just before the filter because that is the first thing that is affected when you start to gel up. For the vast majority of people, they will never need this heater but it will benefit some in colder climates. What I have done is to unplug the relay for the heater so that I won't have problems with air leaks developing from it getting too hot and I have the option to plug it in if my fuel pressure drops.
The other issue is that on most of the 2nd gen 12vers, the heater also contains the prefilter. This is the only filter before the lift pump and is the one that screens out large particles so I would not completely get rid of it unless you install other filtration in its place. If you don't need the heater part, it is possible to remove it from the unit while retaining the prefilter which is a good option for people who stay away from really cold places.
