When are twins required?

Turbos! not sisters! No seriously, Thinking long term mods to my truck, and did a bunch of reading. Seems the cutoff for a single is approx. 375-450hp, depending on much lag you like. I need to keep the ability to tow heavy cross country if needed (FL to OR). The goal WAS 500hp, but after researching 350-400 RWHP seems to be the relaibilty limit, for road trips. I also like the acessibility of just 1 turbo. So from these new goals I'm going for a HX40 flavor. I was holding out on a Scotty for this reason, being it cant be used with twins, well I'm currently planning my single stack setup, and dont want to do the exhaust twice. (which got me to thinking more long term mods) So, 4" all the way to the stack will work for now, and should be perfect for the HX40. However, is the HX40 good for towing, this is where the subject gets confusing. Not much mention of any towing combos with 400hp. Seems once the jump to twins, its more or less racing, and at that point of going to twins its usually to fight of the lag from the 1 turbo to move that much air and keep EGTs within reason. So overall what I want (HP level), does it seem to be a little high for towing demands??

I tow seldom with my rig...and then, not real heavy. But I can tell you I would have no problems with it at my HP.
I too have resisted twins..not sure why...maybe not wanting to undue so much of what I have spent money to do, and than spend more. With new Injector technology (see F-1) and good air I feel you could tow easily with a single set up making 450-500 hp. Just can't use it all if your load is real heavy...need to use a lower setting on your box, which put you back at the 400 hp level you mentioned!
The PDR HX-40 should work well with towing...good spoolup (may need slightly bigger injectors to get fast spooling). Also assume you are aware of the towing twin set-ups.

If you stay with a single, the Scotty II will be a big help!

Rjohnson,

I've heard alot of bad things about EZ/TST PM3 stacked vs Edge Comp. Most opinions I've read about say the combo is very jerky. What is your experience?
If you had it to do over again, would you go with the EZ/TST PM3 stacked or with an Edge Comp.

Thanks, Brad

Researched it heavily before stacking. Sp. w/ several that had same for over a year with no bad side effects.

Yes, Love it and would do it again! Jerkiness you read about comes from extreme fueling of the PM3 COMP model...with or without stacking. EZ stacked on regular PM3 is sweet...best of both world...heavy fueling with some timing!
I like being able to unhook the timing (EZ) and still have fueling...especially with your HO. Also believe the Edge Comp is excellent. Two great choices.

Diesel dynamics has a couple of single's that will support your fueling and spool nicely also a single super b spools quickly and will support 425hp

Piers sells a set of twins(not sisters ) designed for towing and I can tell you first hand its the way to go if you can fit it in the budget. With the mods I have and the stock HX35 when the Comp was on kill I could hit 1500deg in no time flat. Now with the tow twins I can not get over 1100deg(time to talk to Don M ) As far a lag goes if its worse, I dont notice it. Im sure all the Vendors can put a set of twins together for towing but I can only comment on the Piers ones. In my application I used my stock HX35 for the top turbo to cut the costs down for now and will get them to upgrade and rebuild it down the road. I would guess my HP in the 375-400 range? Good luck
