what mods to do?
my 6spd clutch held stage 3 injectors and a 70hp Van Aaken box at roughly 350hp and 700tq for a few months...and it was still good when i swapped it, i lost the clutch one night and did it all at once when really all i needed was the master/slave cylinder assembly.
first thing is get a fuel pressure gauge ASAP...if the lift pump goes, you will know in time before the $1500 vp44 goes with it.
secondly if he is adding a box, get an EGT gauge or pyrometer to make sure its not getting too hot when you pull a load or hot rod around a little bit. anything over 1350 is HOT...but it will survive short blasts of up to 1500, never hold temperatures that high for more than a couple seconds tho.
the edge comp is a nice box, the best part is its adjustable and you can turn it off if it snows and you wanna limit the torque at the wheels and such.
other than that make sure he changes his fuel filter often to help save the injection pump from dirty fuel, and like mentioned you can turn the key on and off 3 times and it will run the codes in the odometer window.
look out for:
p0216-thats death for the vp44, and $1500 from your wallet
p1693 means nothing, just a companion code

turn the key from off to on 3 times, leave it on the 3rd time and look in the cruise/odo window. the first mod you need to do is a set of gauges, not knowing fuel pressure is a sure way to buy some expensive parts. the hook you describe is for automatics with the hy turbo, for the hx you only need a boost elbow or simply block the wastegate line as you will not have enough fuel to get you into boost trouble and it should only do good things for you, providing the puck has a boost fooler, I dont know for sure, the edge products mentioned will give you more power, but the ez would be a dissapointment over the puck, if the ez was sparking you interest use the $$ to get some injectors or nozzle/tips and a boost fooler if the puck does not have one. but seriously you need to pull the codes first as the light only comes on over bad things, if you are already low on fuel pressure you need to clear that up before anything else.
