what mods to do?
what mods to do?
hey guys, im new to diesels. really, im posting for my dad (im into mustangs as you can see by my name, but i love diesel pawr!) who wont get on here himself.
first off its a 2001 duallie, 1 ton, 6 speed cummins. great looking truck, and plenty powerful, but he wants some more power
-whats done so far: Big airstack filter, diablo power programmer, exhaust, and thats it.
-he is wanting to put a waste gate modifier to pump up the boost pressure, tell me about those and how they work, what kinds are better, and any negatives that may come of it. there is one from a place around here called diesel injections services (louisville, ky). that has some sort of hook that holds the wastegate closed up until a certain pressure (it has a spring that lets the hook "lenghten". anybody using one of these.
-he is also interested in getting rid of his diablo for an edge kit (w/ 6 settings). would he benefit from this much?
-finally, when he drives it hard, a Check engine light comes on ,and it shuts down. will stay on for a few days then go off again. is this engine overboost (most likely, we dont have a code puller, and he's not gonna drive 30 miles into town to have it read at an autozone or something).
thanks for your patience, i look forward to learning more about the diesel engine and appreciate any help i can get from this community.

There are two edge models.
EZ around $400 new 65hp/160tq built in boost fooler, one setting probably on ly 10-15 more horses than the box he has
Comp 40-120hp 5 level 5 sub-levels (smoke settings)
You would want to get the check engine light checked out, be sure its not the VP44 injection pump. A box/chip will vastly shorten the life a failing injeciton pump, but if the pump is fine then every thing SHOULD be ok.
Do a search for edge comp, and anything else you need to know
There is endless knowledge here, not me, but on the website.

thanks for the responses. i appreciate it. being a mustang guy, im on a lot of mustang forums, and one thing i see repeated is the great advice given to the people who dont know much about them. thats whats so great about sites like this.

My truck was on the dyno stock at 215hp/450tq. With just an Edge EZ (no boost elbow to allow boost over ~20psi) I ran 245hp/590tq. Same day, same dyno. That was stock air filter and exhaust as well. I would put the truck in the 250hp range at the back tires.
I really like te Edge Comp I have now, it allows different levels for different situations as well as the ability to turn it off (nice in the rain and snow). Much more power than he has now and you'll be looking at a GOOD clutch pretty soon, mine wouldn't hold the Comp on level3/sub-level3 stock.
Gauges are a MUST, at least EGT and fuel pressure (factory lift pump that keeps the injection pump fed and cooled tends to fail and no noticeable symptoms). I like a boost gauge, but it's mostly a pride thing if you have a wastegate. You don't want to run the stock turbo much over 35psi, after that you'll be making a lot more heat and less power.

so much more than he has now, and the clutch will start to go south. i must add that my dad doesnt beat on the truck much, mostly when im in there to show off. i guess hauling a load will make the clutch wear out quicker too with the extra power, huh?
it doesn't seem very consistent as to how much power the stock clutch will hold. mine died at <300hp, HOHN on here still has his stocker with a lot more mods done. luck of the draw, i guess!
i think the worst case of clutch slip is getting on the throttle in a high gear at a low rpm on the highway; not much centrifugal force assisting the pressure plate at that point, and you're throwing a ton of torque at it.

see, never even thought of that, all my mustang power is at WOT where i have good clamping pressure. good point.
he's really wanting an edge comp and we have been looking at those elbows too. how exactly do the elbows work. the mod we heard about the hook holding the wastegate closed, doesnt it do basically the same thing, just a different means of doing it?
He can get the elbow to control the wastegate. You can find them for $5, or one would come with an Edge box if you buy one.
On an automatic, the turbo has a hard line to the wastegate, so you use a j-hook to control the wastegate action instead of using the elbow to restrict the supply line.
