Talking What does a set of 3K Governor springs do?

I hear sooo much about these springs but no one can really eplain why they create soo much performance.... I understand the high rpms would usually mean more power and torque. But your past your main power point in the 12 valve mechanical B. I have been asking around town and most diesel mechanics arent to sure on how it would do soo much for me.

SO NOW I CAME TO THE REAL PRO'S!!!!!!! HELP!!!!

More than a single answer to your question.

Stock Cummins 12 valves have a 2,400-2,800 rpm defuel point. Changing to 3k governor spring kit (GSK) increases the defuel point to 2,800-3,400 rpm.
That rpm sweep alone gets you back into the reason Ford has long been a big diesel leader, you get more rpm that we are used to from gassers.

Another reason is that GSK with a stock fuel plate changes the hp & torque curves to a higher rpm range. The seat of pants meter really enjoys the kick.

Add a plate that works with a governor spring kit and max hp is back in the low 2k rpm band of a 6 in-line, but you still have the full rpm range to play.
$18 from PDR. It's just one spring, raises the defuel point to 3200 RPM. If you know a Bosch pump shop nearby you can probably get one for less than $15. The Bosch part # is in the 1st gen section of the "tech facts" part of this site.

I just got my spring from a local diesel shop yesterday--less than 20 bucks. I've gotta get the 'u' shaped wrenches to loosen my pump...maybe this weekend. My truck feels like it starts to de-fuel around 2250 or so and by the time I hit 2450 she's running on flywheel momentum alone . My reason for the spring is to get more rpm between the 2-3 shift---man there's like a 1000 rpm drop and if I'm headed uphill the gutbag REALLY groans when I hit 3rd at about 1200 rpms . I can usually rev it high enough on the 3-4 uphill and all is well on the flats, but the tranny just seems much happier with more rpms. Since the $$$ isn't there yet for the 5600 conversion, i need this one to last. Plus, I'm just drooling at what its gonna sound like with 30+ pounds of boost at 2900 rpms...mmmm poor 4th gear

96 with automatic? stock or improved transmission?

4k requires the heavy valve springs.
