What To Do With My Trans.?
OK just got my hands on a 2ND gen. diesel. with i believe the 47RE trans. in it? i also just got my hands on my 4 wheeling truck, an 84 Chevy full size blazer. I'm kind of new at all this so bear with me. i have been reading some of the forums to help me out but I'm looking to do some mods as well as tow that blazer where ever to go wheelin. i dont want to go crazy with hp and all, just like chip, exhaust, intake. i also plan to run 36" tires....the problem I'm having right now is i dont know what to do to the trans so it holds up for me. T/C, VB, clutch packs? it does seem to slip a little now i think and it seems like its not so powerful. I'm finding T/C ranging from i think 600 to 1300 $$ but what should i do?? is the real expensive ones for ppl who do like sled pulling and stuff and the cheaper ones like crap?? any suggestions on upgrading my trans anyone??
A TC and VB will help a good trans but won't be worth the $$ on a tranny that slips already.
If you are mechanically inclined and have a shop you can overhaul the tranny yourself, the factory service manual can be had at www.techauthority.com - best $$ I've ever spent on my truck.
My experience with aftermarket tranny parts (limited as it is) points me to suggest contacting DTT at www.dieseltrans.com.

And just an after market TC can be a big mistake... needs at least a VB also. Be sure it's the TC slipping and go from there.

Like everyone else said, if your tranny is already slipping then just save your money and build the whole thing. First thing I'd do is take it to a local shop and have them inspect it and test the pressures and adjust the bands and swap the fluid and give it a once over to see what kind of shape it's really in. If they say it's in good shape then I'd do a torque converter and valvebody and call it good. I'm incredibly happy with my DTT but there are many different choices out there and you should talk to all of the tranny guru's and find out which one suits your needs the best. Also do a search on here for tranny's and you'll find a lot of info that could also help you make your decision.
well i just got the truck its got 60000 on it now. what would it feel like if it were slipping? maybe its not. i work at a shop (training to be a tech.) and i just did a trans. flush on it. only thing i have really experienced with it was (when it sat all day or night and the first drive) at a stop and went to take off and its like it was not it gear, just reved up then it kicked back in gear...happened a like 2 or 3 times in the past 2 months maybe cuz its starting to get cold out or something i don't know....
That sounds like it was just fluid draining out of the converter. Perfectly normal. I usually let mine idle in neutral for about 30 secs to a minute before the first drive everyday to make sure that the entire tranny has fluid in it. If it was slipping you'd feel a shudder.
