Water Injection

well, everyone has been so helpful in the past that i had to come back with another query. in the never ending quest for more power it became aware to me that before i got real serious i needed to get some cooler air. because my truck is one of the non-intercooled versions, this immedietely came to my mind. while searching on the internet i came across the concept of water injection. has anyone heard of this, and if so what are its pros and cons. it costs roughly the same as an intercooler, and i imagine that you could do both if you wanted too. any help would be aprreciated. also as far as filters go for my truck are there any kits similar to the scotty air box for the third gens or am i stuck with the stock filterhousing and just an aftermarket filter. thanks guys.

water injection can be very useful for multiple reasons in a gas motor. I'm not sure about all of the benefits in a diesel, but I'd be of the opinion that intercooling should be done first, then water if you think you need more help.

Thanks furious,
it is a fairly new concept to me, but i did notice that some diesel sites sold kits for water injection. i was thinking the intercooler first too, but i was wanting to know more about water injection since i had never seen it posted on this site. thanks again.

There are several threads on this in the "High Performance/Aftermarket" section of the site. Run a search, there's some good info as I recall.

Don't know about water injection in CTD, but I do that we use water injection in Heavy Frame gas turbines when running on fuel oil to control NOX(emissions). Added benefit - more MWs = more power. I can delve back into the books if you want the theory behind it all.

Water/Meth injection is becoming more and more common in our applications.
The big dogs are using it with decent success as well...
It does help with EGT reduction and supports some decent HP....
One thing that is recommended if you are using this type of enhancement... let the engine idle a moment or two extra after immediate use, before shutting down.
The assures that the cylinders "dry out" after use.

PB.

This might be silly, but if the inital cost is the same, the intercooler wouldn't require you to keep adding water and trying to keep it from freezing in the winter.

Stakeman Has been talking about the water/methanol injection for quite some time, You may E-mail him and see if he has done it or where he is in his research.
He has a 24 valve truck but should work on a mechanical engine as well.
I also agree with installing an air to air aftercooler. once its there you have it with no other costs.
With your mods, I would not think that exhaust temp is a problem yet. I would worry about EGTs when they start getting higher from more mods.
Just my 2 cents.

I am running the Snow Performance Stage 1 Diesel kit.

My last Dyno run showed a gain of 63 hp and 90 something torque with stock injectors and an Edge EZ.

Other TDR members are showing a 100 to 150 drop in Intake air temps, and anywhere from 100 to 300 EGT drops with up to 100 HP gains.

Water Methanol is basically winshield washer fluid, so you don't have to worry about freezing in the winter.
