It's got heat-treated birfs. when I have the money, I'll drop for Super Birfields. I hear they're indestructible. I can't wait to get that truck rolling. I have tube-doors for it, too. So I can ride around in this ultra-tall toyota w/ no fenders and tube doors, a mismatched cab to the bed and a cherry bomb muffler. It's gonna be hilarious.

When I can I'll toss up some pictures of the toy. Gonna have the chrome grille, too.
I don't know about indestructable Super Birfields!! - I watched my buddy try them all and eventually smoke them all.....the guy doing the Supers replaced them free of charge once and that was it.....needless to say, my buddy's 4runner has D60's now!

Depends on your tire size... his latest & greatest 4340/300m birfs are as strong as a 35 spline 60 stub... but they are $650 for 2 birfs and 2 shafts, but with 38's or so, the chance of breaking them is slim, especially with a little 8" ring gear.

Yea, those be the new birfs. Some sweet chromoly stuff.

What engines does he have in his toyota? IMO, tossin' out the axles and/or the motor makes it pointless to call it a toyota - as it's best features are now gone. The birfs give 'em a turning radius 1 foot wider than a battleship. That's 1 thing the d30 has over a birf.

I'm no Toy expert and correct me if I'm wrong here, but the 4340's were available last summer, right? If they were, then those are the latest and greatest that got smoked......the 4runner has 38" swampers and the 4 banger with an aftermarket low range......If he had the 4340's, which I think he did, I would have to disagree that they are stronger than a D60 stub......IMO, I put more torque and load against my 60 axle shafts on my Jeep than his Toy ever will and I don't suffer the breakage......My buddy has had his 4runner out once for a hard romp this year and didn't break a 60 shaft but he was trying!

Well, I call my "Jeep" a "Jeep".....but it isn't really....the steering column and speedo are the only original parts left.....It is an evolutionary type of thing - we all start somewhere with a build up and aren't always sure where it will lead. My buddy really wanted to keep the Toy axles and tried hard (and spent lots of money) to do so, but in the end, he just couldn't keep them together. At that point, 60's were the only logical solution.....

your steering column is chevy, too.

I am not sure if those are the newest, but give him props for breaking a chromoly w/ 38's and the stock 4 banger.

Dana 60's are only cheaper than birfs if you can find 'em cheap and will install 'em yourself. Most people won't...which is great cus I'll gladly be paid to do the swap for them.

Yeah, yeah, I know it is a GM column!! In those days, AMC borrowed parts from GM, Chrysler and Ford!!!
