Use Edge EZ without gauges?
I made a post earlier about needing a little extra power when going from 3rd to OD while pulling the RV. Seems with the 3.55 rear end, the torque isn't enough to maintain 60mph while in OD without low RPMs. Some suggested using the Edge EZ on level 1 for that little extra. My truck is stock and intend to keep it that way. If I choose to use the Edge EZ for that little extra do I need temperature gauges. The Edge website says the controller will automatically keep the temperatures safe. What say you?
Here is the post I made earlier that you can read to understand my predicament.

Thanks for the input.

Anytime you modify your truck for performance, you run the risk of damage. The degree of modification generally determines the risk and severity of damage. According to your member info, you have been around here for quite some time. I have followed these forums for over a year now, and can say that I have seen every type of mod and every type of damage that can be done to a truck. I chose to go with modest changes and am quite happy with the results. (read my signature below)
The thing you seem to be avoiding is acknowledement of the fact that your truck, and every other automatic tranny truck, is not happy and is not in it's most efficient range of operation when lugging it in OD at the RPM's you mention. Take it out of OD at those speeds. A fueling/timing box will not FIX the problem, only mask it. You WILL have higher exhaust temps when adding fuel at low RPM, but most small boxes like EDGE EZ and van Aaken won't completely overtax your engine, however your tranny is a different issue. Low internal pressures in the tranny WILL cause TC problems and failure later on. Low pressures are a fact of life at lower RPM. Lower RPM is exactly the range you are trying to operate your rig. More fuel/timing WILL give you more juice at the lower RPM range, but not without a price. Higher temps and possibly TC damage over time.
All that said, I like my van Aaken box with the S&B cold air intake. Why? Well if you read my sig below you will notice that we pull a 32' toyhauler. Loaded for trips to the track and vacations, it tips the scales around 14,000 lbs. I don't lug my rig, because when it ceases to pull in whatever gear I'm in, I simply downshift to get the revs up a bit. It works quite well.
Heimancowboy said it best when he stated that running higher RPM's will allow you to pull easily. Jbody is also correct in stating that they don't pull as well as some of us would like. I didn't like mine stock and made some minor changes. It works for me. And no, I don't have gauges other than fuel pressure. I also put over 30k miles on this truck this year and it keeps on truckin' perfectly.
The EZ will probably do it for you, so will the van Aaken. Buy one and enjoy the added power. Best of luck my fellow TDR'r.
I don't even like OD at 60 mph when empty! The spread from 3rd to OD is a lot...especially if towing. But the good news is, you can not hurt your engine if you run at 2500+/- rpm all day!.
If your going to cruise/tow at 60 mph, get use to the higher rpm sound and enjoy the power!

I am glad some one answered this....I started to but really didn't want to say OD + 3:55 + load is the problem. It's like cheaper, faster, better....you have to eliminate one or the other to solve the problem you describe.
Like RJ said, take it out of OD and let it talk.

I posted a few times about my move from CA to WA. I was 18,060 pounds total weight truck and trailer. I had an EZ and did 70-75 the whole way (went down to 49 mph on lookout pass MT/ID state line). There is no way you can stay at 60 in OD- you will get too hot with any box, and will be lugging the engine too much IMO. You either have to drive with OD off, or go faster. An EZ will help alot pulling though.
I did have guages and was at 21 pounds boost almost the whole way. I averaged 12 mpg the entire trip.

The Dodge trannies don't like to be worked too hard in OD. The EZ won't cause you a problem but you will fry your OD if you try to lug it. If you insist on towing in OD, get a trans temp guage at the very least.
